Richard Sandberg 1915 - 2003

Richard Sandberg, 88, Lignite, died Saturday in a Kenmare hospital.

Richard was born March 8, 1915, in Lignite, ND, to Hans and Jenny (Bengtsson) Sandberg. He was reared and educated in Lignite and graduated from Lignite High School. Following high school, he worked on the dam in Fort Peck, MT. He also hauled coal and grain for a time and worked near Fortuna on the Great Northern Railroad. On June 30, 1939, he married Lillian Monson. They made their home in Lignite. Richard started hauling gravel and in 1944 he started Sandberg Sand and Gravel Company. He owned and operated Sandberg Sand and Gravel, which later became Sandberg Redi-Mix until semi-retiring in 1974. He continued his interests in the company until retiring in 1995, but still remained available when needed. He also owned and operated Sandberg Ski-Doo from 1961 until 1978. Richard entered the Kenmare hospital on October 3, 2002 where he resided until the time of his death.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Lignite. He was on the Lignite City Council for 33 years, serving as Mayor and alderman. He was also a member of the Lignite Fire Department for years.

Survivors: Wife, Lillian, Lignite; children, Donna Lou (Leslie) Witty, Texas, Richard E. Sandberg, Lignite and Duane (Kayla) Sandberg, Kenmare; daughter-in-law, Nadine Sandberg, Lignite; grandchildren, Nicole Sandberg, Jackie Nodland, Kathy Maier, Paul Witty, Tyler, Megan, Lucas, Cameron, Brandon, Natasha and Preston Sandberg; great-grandchildren, Eric Nodland and Jesse Maier; sister, Judith Hepper, Battlelake, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jerome and brothers, Harry, Carl and Gunnar Sandberg.

Funeral: Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Lignite.

Visitation: Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Lignite.

Burial: Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, Lignite.
