Lillian Sandberg 1915- 2011 Lillian was born April 21, 1915 at her family homestead in Dale Township, Burke County. Lillian was the 9th child of the 12 children born to Charles and Anna (Dahl) Monson. Life was hard in Lillian’s early years but she always found the humor in situations. She loved telling stories about their life on the prairie. Such as when the school bus tipped over in a ditch with all the students after their school had burned up and they had to attend another school for a while. She was asked if the bus had a roof, no she said it was just an old buckboard. Lillian also told of the time the children were taking eggs into Woburn and they had run the horses too hard and found all the eggs broken when they got their so no one got any candy or groceries. Probably a lesson was learned that time. She also had humorous stories about riding horses and tricks the family played on each other. Music was a great part of Lillian’s life. She played the organ and always had a song on her lips throughout her whole life. Neighbors on the prairie were always very important to the Monson family. Many of the neighbors were relatives and special friends included the McEvers family. Lillian loved to dance and when she got older the neighbors and her family attended barn dances in the area. She worked in Lignite as a cook in cook cars and worked in various jobs around town. She met Richard Sandberg and they were married on June 30, 1939 at the First Lutheran Parsonage in Lignite, North Dakota. When Lillian was first married she cooked three meals a day for teachers in her home. Four children were born to Lillian and Richard, Donna Lou, Jerome, Richard and Duane. Through the years Lillian’s great love was caring for her family and home. The only place Lillian wanted to live was in her home in Lignite. Faraway places never interested her. She was always satisfied with what she had. She was always there when the children came home from school and she would warm their cold hands in the winter, sewed most of their clothes and always had time to cook extra food to take to someone that was in need. She canned jams, jellies, relishes, beet pickles much of which was given to friends. Lillian was a terrific cook and baker. Another job that Lillian always was happy to do was drive people to Doctors appointments in other towns. She was a kind and generous woman to her friends and neighbors. Her Grandchildren were always welcome and eager to go stay with Grandma Lillian. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Lignite and worked with the ladies that made quilts for Lutheran World Relief. She was also a member of the Monson-Finkenhagen American Legion Auxiliary, and the Lignite Senior Citizens. She learned to play Pinochle while she was in her 80’s and playing cards with her friends at the seniors. She always said you have to be with the people and she really loved being with her friends. She was active in the Red Hatters. Lillian and Richard were great sports fans and loved watching the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls. She was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins and would stay up in the evenings as long as it took to finish the game. She had a great sense of humor and could always remember a joke to tell. She had a special song that she sang to her Grandchildren, family and friends. Lillian loved to do embroidery and made many dishtowels as gifts to her family and friends. She enjoyed entering them at the Flaxton Fair and was always anxious to check out if she had gotten a prize or not.
