Alice E. Sand 1920 - 2003 Alice E. Sand, 82, Kenmare, ND, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003, in a Stanley, ND hospital. Alice was born on August 9, 1920, in Churchs Ferry, ND, a daughter of Walter and Helene (Hillerman) Jacobson. She was raised and educated in the Churchs Ferry area and graduated from Churchs Ferry High School in 1938. She entered nurses training in Rugby, ND, and graduated with her nursing degree in 1942. She married Clayton Sand on October 10, 1942 in Norman OK. They lived there while he was stationed in the Navy during World War II, and later lived in Seattle, WA and San Diego, CA. Following her husband's discharge, they returned to Rugby, ND. In 1947, they moved to Kenmare and Alice went to work for the Kenmare Hospital. They moved to Jamestown, ND in 1959, and then returned to Kenmare in 1960. In 1972, Alice returned to the University of North Dakota, where she attended and was a member of the first graduating class of UND's nurse practitioners program. Her career at the Kenmare Hospital, the Kenmare Clinic, and Medical Arts Clinic spanned 38 years of dedicated service to her community. She retired in 1987, but continued to receive calls and questions from friends and neighbors having medical concerns. She also worked as a visitation assistant for Thompson-Larson Funeral Home in Kenmare for several years. She continued to live in Kenmare until her recent move to Stanley, ND, where she could be closer to her family. Alice was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare, and was a former church council member. She was very active in church and community activities. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and supported many local school activities. She was an avid bridge player and taught many young people the art of bridge. She belonged to various social clubs throughout her life. Alice especially loved spending time with her family and was very proud of their accomplishments. Bismarck, ND; seven grandchildren, Patrick (Karen) O'Keefe, Peter
O'Keefe, Alison (Steve) Repnow, Alex Aardahl, Jessica and Anne
Mahlum and Joel (Amanda) Mahlum; five great-grandchildren, Connor
and Abby O'Keefe, Drew and Dane Repnow and Justin Mahlum; one
sister, Blanche Disher, Fargo, ND; one brother, Robert (Bev)
Jacobson, Prior Lake, MN; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law,
Lois Ann Jacobson, Olga Jacobson, Doug (Harriet) Jensen, Lyla
(Maurie0Knutson, and Joanne (Mel) Naggatz. Numerous nieces, nephews
and relatives also survive. Funeral Service: Saturday, August 9, 2003, 11:00 a.m. at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare. Visitation: Friday, August 8, 2003 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare. Burial: Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare.
