Lyle J. Samson 1924 - 2011 Lyle Jerome Samson was born September 23, 1924, the son of Louis and Marie (McLean) Samson, in Edinburg, ND. He was raised in Fairdale, ND where he grew up on the farm with his six brothers and sisters. He served in the Navy during WWII prior to attending North Dakota State University in Fargo, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture in 1950. Lyle married Helen Odland August 27, 1951, in Kenmare, ND. They made their home Leeds, ND, where from 1950 until 1954, he was the vocational agriculture instructor. In July 1954, he joined the Soil Conservation Service as a work unit conservationist based in Velva. He was transferred to Bottineau in 1957 to serve as a district conservationist for Bottineau County. In 1973, he was transferred to Minot, where he served as district conservationist for Ward County until 1979. Lyle then took the opportunity to make a move to Bismarck, where he served as the North Dakota State Agronomist until his retirement from the SCS in December 1988. After his service in the SCS, Lyle served as the executive director for the Manitoba-North Dakota Zero-Tillage Farmer’s Association. Following this, Lyle worked for the ND State Land Department doing land inspections. Throughout Lyle’s career, he received many awards for his service. He was especially proud of the USDA Superior Service Award, which was presented at a ceremony in Washington, DC in 1986. Lyle was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Minot, where he enjoyed time in the kitchen making Klub for the annual Hostfest. He was a member of the Minot Kiwanas Club. He enjoyed teaching Sunday school. He served on the Board of Directors of Metigoshe Ministries, and was involved in the building of the original Chapel and the Christian Center at Lake Metigoshe. He was very involved in the planning and initial development of the Bottineau Winter Park Ski Area. Lyle loved his time spent with family and friends in the Turtle Mountains and at Lake Metigoshe. He committed much time and effort to projects in the area. His hobbies included golfing, photography, and the building of picture frames, cabinets, and cabins. His loving family includes: wife of 59 years, Helen, Minot; sons, Gary (Carmen) Samson, Minot, and Tom (Lynn Brokaw) Samson, Bismarck; grandchildren, Matthew Samson, and his fiancé, Marcela Hoeven; and Afton and Brett Samson; sister, JoAnne Jones, Tucson, AZ; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Immediately following the funeral service, you are invited for a time of fellowship and lunch in the lower level of the church. Those attending the graveside service will join you when they return from the cemetery. Our family would like to thank all of you for your many acts of kindness.
