William Slater 1908 - 2006
He was born Jan. 28, 1908, near Columbus, ND, where his parents, Timothy and Bridget (Maddock) Slater had homesteaded. He grew up on the family farmstead near Columbus and attended schools there and in Kenmare and later in Fargo, ND. After completing his education, he moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he began a 53-year career with Coca Cola Bottling Co. On Jan. 31, 1942, he married Dorothy Eiler at St. Mark's Catholic
Church in St. Paul, MN. Shortly thereafter, he entered military
service, and served during World War II in the Navy's Seabee
Battalion in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945. Following the war,
he returned to his position with Coca Cola. He was transferred
by the company in 1945 to Minot. While with Coca Cola in Minot,
he was a co-founder with Kenneth Miller of He had been a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church in Minot
from the time he moved to the Bill's faith meant everything to him, and he practiced it diligently. For many years, until his health failed, he attended daily Mass. He loved North Dakota. Driving through its countryside to serve his Coca Cola customers was sheer pleasure for him. He was an outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors: his wife, Dorothy; daughters and their husbands, Frances (John) Johannes, Newtown Square, PA, and Helen (Joseph) Moon, Niskayuna, NY; eight grandchildren, Teresa (Jack) Smith, Michael Johannes, James Johannes, William (Stefanie) Moon, Franklin (Erica) Moon, Mary Moon, Catherine Moon and Michelle Moon; and two great-grandchildren, Katherine Smith and Julia Moon; sister-in-law, Agnes Slater, Minot; brother-in-law; William Harrington, Minneapolis, MN; several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Slater, his parents, a brother Robert Slater, and a sister, Mary Harrington. Funeral: Saturday, February 25, 2006, at 1 p.m. in St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot. Visitation and rosary: Friday from noon to 7 p.m., with the rosary at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. Memorials are preferred for the tuition of children attending St. Leo's School, a member of the Minot Catholic Schools system. Celebrants of the Liturgies: Father Chris B.
