Walter H. Saastad • 1915 - 2011 Walter was born October 28, 1915 in rural Sawyer, ND to Ole and Bertha (Berg) Saastad. He attended country school near Sawyer and graduated from Sawyer High School in 1934. Following graduation Walter continued to work on the family farm. Walter married Marie (Wojahn) Bick on September 20, 1963 in Velva. Following their marriage they made their home on Marie’s farm in Sawyer Township, south of Sawyer, ND. In 1981 they retired from farming but continued to live on the farm until 2008 when they moved to Minot. The last two years they lived at Angel Adult Foster Care in Carpio, ND. Marie passed away June 2, 2011. Walter had served on the Willis Township Board of Supervisors and served on the Sawyer School Board. He was a member of the Board of Directors for Grant Farmers Mutual Insurance and was a member of the Elks Lodge. Walter was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church in Velva, where he had served on the church council. A special thank you to Candy and Steve at Angel Adult Foster Care Home in Carpio, ND for the extraordinary love and care given to Marie and Walter during their stay with you. Those who shared in his life, Stepdaughter, Phyllis (Bick) Bailey, Minot; step-grandchildren, Rochelle Swenson, Steve Anderson and Terry Bick; step-great-grandchildren, Melissa, Zech and Jeffrey; sister, Olga Page, Bismarck, ND; sisters-in-law, May Saastad, Minot, ND and Myrtle Wojahn, Velva, ND; numerous nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; stepson, Mitchell Bick; his parents; brothers, Norman, Arthur, Clarence and Harold Saastad; sisters, Norma Schmid and Alice Schmid. Funeral: Monday, August 29, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva, ND. Visitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign the register book, Monday one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial: Monday at 3:00 p.m. at Rosehill Cemetery, Minot, ND. Memorial donations may be made to an organization of the donor’s choice.
