Marie Saastad 1917 - 2011

Marie Saastad PhotoMarie Saastad, 93, Sawyer, ND, died Thursday, June 2, 2011, at the Angel Adult Foster Care Home in Carpio.

Marie Esther Wojahn was born December 11, 1917, a daughter of Julius and Caroline (Grunseth) Wojahn, on the family farm south of Velva, ND. She was raised there and graduated from Velva High School in 1934.

Marie married Otto H. Bick March 20, 1936, in the Sawyer/Velva area. They made their home on the Bick family farm located in Sawyer Township of Ward County, near Sawyer, ND. They farmed small grains and she also worked at Trinity Hospital as a nurses aid. Otto passed away February 16, 1958.

Marie married Walter Saastad September 20, 1963, in Velva. Marie continued to reside on the farm located in Sawyer Township. She and Walt farmed there as well as farming the Saastad Farm land in Newman Township.

She was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, where she was active in the women’s circle and the quilting group.

She enjoyed quilting, gardening, and working outdoors.

Her loving family includes:  husband, Walt, Carpio; children, Phyllis (Bick) Bailey, Minot;
grandchildren, Rochelle Swenson, Steve Andersen, and Terry Bick; great-grandchildren, Melissa, Zech, and Jeffrey; sister-in-law, Myrtle Wojahn, Velva; and numerous nieces, and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Otto Bick; son, Mitchell Bick; brothers, Paul and Hugo Wojahn; sisters, Frieda Sandberg, Hilda Hatley, and Lila Olson; and an infant sister, Clara Wojahn.

Funeral: Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva.

Interment:
  Wednesday at 3:00 pm at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.

Visitation: 
Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials
: are preferred to an organization of the donor’s choice.

Following the funeral service, please join the family for a time of fellowship and lunch in the fellowship hall. The graveside service will commence at approximately 3:00 pm.
