James W. Rust PhotoJames W. Rust, 81, Minot, ND, formerly a longtime resident of Columbus, ND, died Monday, June 20, 2011, in a Minot hospital, after a courageous six-month battle with cancer.

James Wray “Jim” “Bud” “Rusty” Rust was born May 1, 1930, a son of William Conrad Rust, Sr. and Bessie Irene (Gabbott) Rust, in Denver, Colorado.

James enlisted in the United States Navy in September of 1948. He proudly served his country for 20 years with his last rank being Senior Chief Gunners Mate (E-8). He served on several Navy Ships, including the USS Oriskany, USS Dale, USS Kitty Hawk, USS Bainbridge, and the USS Canberra. He also served as a naval recruiter in Miles City, and in Great Falls, MT, as an Ammunition Storage Supervisor in Kodiak, AK, and with the Armed Service Police in San Francisco, CA.

Jim was united in marriage to Maxine C. Gunderson May 24, 1959, in Miles City, MT. To this union, three children were born: Mark, Jon, and Marla. The Navy led Jim and his family to live in various locations including: Norfolk, VA, Camden, NJ, and White Sands Missile Range in Las Cruces, NM. He was honorably discharged in 1968.
 
Following his retirement as a decorated veteran, Jim and Maxine and their family settled in Maxine’s home area of Columbus, ND, where they resided for 29 years. Jim worked for various Columbus businesses including: Miller Hardware and Chevrolet, Durick Brothers Ford, and the Baukol-Noonan Mines. In May of 1972, Jim became the owner/operator of Jim’s Standard Service, a business he operated until August of 1980. He then drove truck for various companies including; Dresser Atlas, Power Fuels, and Matador Service. He also was part owner of T & C’s Town and Country Bar and Steakhouse in Noonan, ND.

In 1997, Jim and Maxine moved their house from Columbus to Minot.  Jim went to work for Tru Value Hardware, and then began his employment at Superpumper North Hill.  He was employed there for the last 13 years, until shortly before his death.

Jim was an excellent marksman, having shot with the U.S. Navy National Pistol Team.  He attended and excelled at many pistol competitions.  He enjoyed hunting and target shooting with his children and grandchildren.  Jim loved to read, bowl, listen to country music, and watch the History Channel and his Minnesota Twins.  He loved to dance.  He and Maxine kicked up their heels many Saturday nights in Larson, ND.  Most of all, he loved his family.

Jim was a life-time member of the National Rifle Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a member of the Lions Club in Columbus, ND.

His loving family includes:  wife of 52 years, Maxine, Minot; daughter, Marla Triplett, Minot, and grandchildren, Marissa and Nathan Triplett, Minot;  son, Jon (Tammie) Rust, Grand Forks, and granddaughter, Cassie, Wahpeton, ND, and step-grandchildren, Jenna and Brandon Flatebo, Grand Forks; son, Mark “Z” (Mary Ann) Rust, Missoula, MT.  He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Terry (Dard) Price, Ken (Joanne) Parsons, Linda (Grims) Gislason, Sharon Coshow, and Bobby’s girls, Pam and Dawn.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and four siblings, Roberta “Bobby”, Betty, Helen and Bill.
 
Funeral:  Saturday, July 9, 2011, at 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbus, ND.

Interment:
  Burial with military honors provided by the Frye-Haugerud American Legion Post #183, of Columbus, ND, at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Columbus, ND, overlooking his wife’s farmland.

Visitation: 
Friday, July 8, from noon to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

His immediate family in Minot are currently evacuated due to the flood.  Mail, however, can still be sent to 1908 7th Ave. SW, Minot, ND 58701.

Memorials to the family are preferred.

Immediately following the funeral service, please join the family for a time of fellowship and lunch in the fellowship hall. The graveside service will commence at approximately 1:00 pm.
