Diane Rosenau, 51, Upham, ND, died Wednesday, August 8, 2007, in a Minot hospital.

Diane Marie Johnson was born September 19, 1955, the daughter of Robert L. "Bob" and Betty Marie (Engelhard) Johnson in Breckenridge, MN. She spent her childhood years on a farm in McCauliville, MN, with her parents and her older sister, Linda. Bob's job transferred him to Minot, ND. This move was to be a defining point for Diane because she spent the rest of her time here in North Dakota. Twelve years of schooling created solid friendships in Minot, but her true love was born and raised about an hour's ride to the north.

His name was Richard and he asked for her hand in marriage. Bob gave his permission, Diane said yes and from that point on, they were simply known as "the Rosenau's." Diane was married to Richard D. Rosenau on July 9, 1982, in Minot. They made their home on the Rosenau family farm located in Deep River Township of McHenry County, near Upham. Their first born son, Erick Robert "Rickie" Rosenau was born September 21, 1983. He waited and prayed for nine long years for his brother, Dillon, to arrive. He arrived on March 22, 1992. Their prayers for a daughter were answered much sooner because on November 17, 1995, Madeline was born. Before she was diagnosed with cancer, Diane had stated that she had carved out her piece of heaven and it had three kids and a farmer on it.

When it was time for her children to attend school, she went into the school setting with them. Her first position at Upham Public School used her expertise with children and her gift of patience to work with special needs children. She continued with Upham until it closed. She made the transition to Granville Public School quickly and found that she could love working in that setting as long as the kids were there. Up until her last bout with cancer, she had every intention of returning to Granville Public School this fall.

It only stands to reason; if Upham is home, then the people there are her family. As we watched the men and women close ranks around Rick, Diane and the kids, we realize what it means to belong to the family of farming.

She was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church, Upham, ND, where she taught Sunday school. She was the National Honor Society advisor for the T-G-U Granville School and was the school's Speech Coach. She also was the local coordinator for the New Hope Relay for Life, participated in several local food and clothing drives, and was the local Blood Drive coordinator.

Her loving family includes: husband of 25 years, Richard, Upham, ND; children, Erick Robert, Dillon Lee, and Madeline Elizabeth Rosenau, all of Upham; mother and step-father, Betty Marie and William Richardson, Fargo, ND; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Phyllis and Dennis Rosenau, Upham; sister, Linda Johnson, Ramsey, MN, step-sisters, Nancy Brennan, Colstrip, MT, Katherine Richardson, New York City , NY; step-brothers, Tom Dering, Santa Rosa, CA, Rane Richardson, Albuquerque, NM, Nelson Richardson, New York City, NY, and Joseph Richardson, Fargo, ND; sister-in-law, Pam Hooker, Rugby; and several nieces nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
