Opal E. Ronning 1917 - 2010 Opal Esterline Halquist was born June 30, 1917 in Hanley Falls, MN, the daughter of Frank and Martha Halquist. In 1923, the family moved to rural Garrison, ND, where her father farmed and worked for the county road department. Opal completed the first eleven years of her education in Garrison and in 1935 graduated from Makoti High School. On July 26, 1942, Opal married Leon Ronning at Zion Lutheran Church in Minot. They lived for two years in St. Paul, Minnesota while Leon was stationed at Fort Snelling Army Hospital. Upon Leon’s discharge from the Army, they moved to Ryder, ND for several years before moving to Minot in 1947. Leon worked at the Veterans Hospital in Minot, and later the Air Force Hospital, until his retirement in 1972. Opal worked various jobs over the years, but was mainly a homemaker. Upon Leon’s death on April 17, 1997, Opal remained in Minot for five years, and then moved to Bismarck to be closer to her son and his family. In 2006, Opal moved back to Minot and remained there until her death. Opal is survived by her son, Robert (Sharon) Ronning, Minot; two grandchildren, Stephen (Janae) Ronning, Minot and Keri (Randy) Flint, Palm Springs, CA; four great-grandchildren, Aiden and Chase Flint, Palm Springs, Sabryn and Sienna Ronning, Minot; two nieces, Yvonne (Jim) Erb and Sherryl (Rick) Heidt, all of Bismarck, ND. Opal was preceded in death by her husband Leon; her parents; two sisters, Vera Giffey and Hazel Snippen, and a brother, Arnold Halquist. Funeral: Monday, June 14, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot, ND. Visitation: Sunday, June 13, 2010, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND. Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, ND. Memorials are preferred to Christ Lutheran Church Music Fund, Minot, ND. Officiating Clergy: Pastor David Maxfield Music Congregational Hymns Honorary Bearers: Opal's family and friends Active Bearers: Kent Hanson, Jim Erb, Dick Wohl, Ricky Heidt, Dick Butts, Alex Wohl Everyone is invited to join the family for lunch and fellowship in the lower level of the church. Those not attending the graveside service may begin the meal and the family will join you when they return from the cemetery. Our family would like to thank everyone for the many acts
