Howard G. Rockeman 1919 - 2008
Howard
G. Rockeman, 89, of Donnybrook, ND went to his Heavenly Home
Sunday, September 14, 2008.
There will be a celebration of his life Thursday, September
18 at 10:30 AM at the Donnybrook United Methodist Church with
Pastor Kathy Hammond officiating. Internment will follow at Aurelia
Moravian Cemetery, rural Donnybrook.
Visitation will take place at Thompson-Larson Funeral
home on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 from 2:00 until 7:00 p.m.
at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Howard was born April 14, 1919 on the Rockeman family farm near
Aurelia, North Dakota to August and Marie (Albert) Rockeman.
He graduated from Donnybrook High School in 1937. His love for
the land started at an early age when he began to help his father
with farm chores. Howard continued to work on the farm and ranch
until he moved to Emerald Court in June 2007.
On June 11, 1958 Howard married Elvina Scharbow. To this union
two sons were born, Mark and Karl.
He was the recipient of the Pioneer Farm Award, Son of the Pioneer
and the National Trust for Historic Preservation Farm Heritage
Award. Howard was a man of quiet yet thoughtful contemplation.
His knowledge was vast, and his advice was sought by family and
church members. He was member, elder and Sunday School teacher
at the Aurelia Moravian Church in Aurelia until it closed in
the early 1960's. He then became a member of Donnybrook United
Methodist Church and served as church treasurer for many years.
Howard was a member of the North Dakota Stockman's Association
for 60 years.
Howard served in the Army during WW II (Pacific Theatre) earning
a number of medals and awards including: American Defense Service
Medal of Good Conduct , Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic
Medal, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged
as a Tech. Sgt.
Howard is survived by his wife of 50 years Elvina, from Donnybrook,
sons Mark (Annette), Donnybrook; and Karl (fiancée' Jessica)
of Richardton, ND and grandsons Christopher & Brett Rockeman
of Donnybrook and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Myra; and brother,
Lloyd.
