EMMA RIEGER JOURNEY'S END June 16, 1918 ~ January 15, 2008
Emma Schmalz was born June 16, 1918, the daughter of Nickolus and Barbara (Stroh) Schmalz in Kandel, Kries, Odessa, Russia. She was raised on a farm. Emma was married to Wendelin Rieger September 25, 1939, in Kandel, Kries, Odessa, Russia. She fled to Germany with her two children during WWII. In 1945, she was reunited with her husband in Germany. In March of 1952, she and her family immigrated to Linton, ND. In April of that same year, they moved to Minot, ND. She worked as a laundress at Minot Steam Laundry for several years before retiring in 1964. Wendelin passed away September 19, 2002. Following her husband's death, she continued to reside in Minot. She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting and playing cards with her lady friends. Surviving family includes: son, Bernhard (Elaine) Rieger, Thousand Oaks, CA; daughter, Frieda (Henry) Opitz, Spring Hill, FL; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several cousins who are living in Germany. Emma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wendelin; son, William Rieger; daughter, Barbara Rieger. Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, January 21, 2008,
