Katherine N. Riba, 89, Minot, died Tuesday, August 18, 2009 in a local nursing home after a miraculous attempt to beat her illness.

Katherine (Kay) was born in Rushford, Minnesota on February 22, 1920. She was the adopted daughter of Borghild and James Johnson. She was raised on a farm near Columbus, North Dakota. She attended rural schools and graduated in 1938. Kay then moved to Minot to attend college. Upon getting her teaching degree, she taught in rural schools.

While in Minot, Kay met Paul N. Kabanuk. They married in 1940 and the union produced four daughters who meant the world to her. After briefly living in Chicago, Illinois and Portland, Oregon, the family moved back to North Dakota and farmed near Max. In 1958, the family moved to Minot. Their marriage ended in 1964.

Kay worked hard to support her family as a single parent in the 1960s. She worked at City Bakery in downtown Minot for a number of years. When that bakery closed, she went to work at the bakery at SunMart/Miracle Mart in the Arrowhead Shopping Center. Kay also worked part-time at the Moose Club for many years.

Katherine married George W. Riba in 1978. They lived in Minot, where they spent much of their spare time dancing, traveling and visiting with friends and family. They especially enjoyed their grandchildren. Kay was a joy to be around and had a generous spirit. Her determination and kind heart was an inspiration to all who knew her. When she retired in 1997 at the age of 77, she got her first driver's license to ensure their independence when George could no longer drive. George passed away in March of 2009, after 31 years of marriage.

Katherine was a member of the Moose and Eagles clubs, as well as First Lutheran Church, Minot. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
