Jim W. Quinlen, Jr., 86, Minot, ND, died Monday, February 9, 2009 in his home.

Jim was born August 14, 1922 in Minot, ND, the son of James W. and Otilda "Tillie" (Christianson) Quinlen, Sr. He was raised in Minot and graduated from Minot High School in 1942.

He entered the United States Navy on September 17, 1942 and served on the U.S.S. Claxton, which was part of the Destroyer Squadron 23, in the South Pacific, during World War II. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. The squadron also received a citation from the United States Navy Fleet Commander. On December 25, 1945 he was honorably discharged and returned to North Dakota.

On October 27, 1946, Jim married Elaine June Aamondt at First Lutheran Church in Minot. Jim worked at the Leland Parker Hotel for a short time, before starting a career at Northern States Power, in Minot, which is now Xcel Energy. He worked at the Bison Plant for NSP, east of Minot and eventually became operations manager. He worked for NSP until his retirement. His wife June died on June 6, 2006.

Jim was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church, Minot. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #753, Minot and served as local commander in 1959 and again, from 1961 to 1964. He was the District 3 Commander for the V.F.W from 1963 to 1964, he served as Department Surgeon and also served as Grand Commander for the Military Order of the Cooties from 1974 to 1975. Jim was on the committee that was instrumental in getting the V.F.W. started in Minot. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #26, Minot.

Jim was a Golden Gloves boxer and boxing instructor. He ice skated and roller skated in his younger days. He enjoyed bowling and bowled with the NSP team for several years and he also played darts in the Minot dart league, where his team took the state title in 2000 and 2001. Jim loved his family, especially his grandchildren. Jim and his wife were avid campers and enjoyed spending time with family and friends at Lake Metigoshe. Jim was one of a kind, a truly great father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, who will be deeply missed.

Those who shared in his life, Children, Cherie (Boyd) Mullinix, Chattanooga, TN, Terry (Peggy) Quinlen, Minot, Gary (LeAnn) Quinlen and Jerry Quinlen, all of Bismarck; eight grandchildren, James (Terri) Mullinix, Jessica Hamilton, Justin Quinlen, Erica (Kevin) Erickson and Denbea (Ryan) McNally; four great-grandchildren, Sarah, Kyanna, Jason and Isaak; sister-in-law, Lowaine Larson, Minot; several nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, June; his parents and his mother and father-in-law, Adolph and Jenny Aamondt.

Funeral: Friday, February 13, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church, Minot.

Visitation: Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot and Friday one hour prior to the service in the church.

Burial: Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #753, Minot, ND, or to the American Cancer Society.
