Esther Pretzer • 1906 - 2004 Esther Pretzer, 1029 NW 10, Minot, ND, formerly of Velva died Monday, December 27th in a Minot Hospital. Mable Esther Olson was born July 29, 1906, the daughter of Nels K. and Emma Louise (Jorgenson) Olson on a farm south of Velva. She had six sisters and three brothers. She was reared and educated in the area, attending country school and graduated from the eighth grade at 12 years of age. Esther was an excellent cook and baker and worked as such at the Russell House in Velva for many years. It was here that she met Sydney Pretzer, whom she married February 3, 1925. They made their home on a farm north of Velva, where a daughter, Lois, and a son Dale were born. They moved to Velva in 1930 where Sydney became the manager of the Farmers Union Oil Company. She was a stay at home mom, until her family was full grown. She lived in the same house in Velva for 60 years. Esther kept records for the oil company for a short time. In 1957, she started baking and cooking for the Velva High School noon lunch program. The school kids loved her delicious rolls and baked goods, for which she received many hugs and praises. Esther was an artist with a crochet hook, and if she could see it with her eyes, she could make it with her hands. She even crocheted a 24 x 36 display of the Lords Prayer. Sydney died in 1962, and she retired from the school in 1977. She regularly attended the Senior Citizens Center, where she was involved with lots of quilting. Esther had a small stroke in 1995, and moved to Minot to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Stanley Effertz. She is survived by: daughter, Lois (Stanley) Effertz, Minot , son, Dale, Carrington, ND, brother Charles (Evelyn), Minot. 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Jean, her husband Sydney, two daughter-in-laws, two brothers, six sisters, and grandson David. Funeral: Friday. until 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, MINOT. Thursday
