Louise Marie Petrick 1931 - 2002

Louise Marie (Shafer) Petrick, 1739 16th St NW, Minot, died Monday, May 6, 2002, in a Bismarck hospital following a brief and puzzling illness.

She was born February 2, 1931, in Bantry, ND, to Fred and Frances (Wormsbecker) Shafer. She was raised and educated in Banty. Times were hard, then and at the age of 16, Louise left home to work for family friends who owned the Makoti Café. It was there that she met her future husband, Norbert Petrick. They were married in Makoti on August 22, 1948, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Louise and Norb lived on the family farm south of Makoti.

Through the years, Louise was an active member of the Borderling Homemakers, St. Paul's American Lutheran Church Women, The Parent Teachers Association, holding various offices in those organizations. She taught Sunday school, served as Sunday School Superintendent and Christmas Program Coordinator and was a Bible study leader for the church's American Lutheran Church Women. Louise was active in Makoti Community projects, serving as Publicity chairperson for the Community Betterment Contest in 1975, attending Grain Terminal Association in Minneapolis in 1973 and 1975, co chaired the making of the heritage quilt and served on the History Committee for the Diamond Jubille in 1986.

Louise was always interested in new challenges and in 1987, earned her High School Diploma by correspondence, fulfilling her life long dream. In 1986, Louise was named "North Dakota Mother of the Year". This was a great honor for her and she enjoyed representing North Dakota at the National Mother of the Year Convention in Portland, OR. Following Norb's death in 1989, Louise turned the farming over to her eldest son, Terry and she moved to Minot. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and was an active "Volunteer Caregiver.
Louise is survived by her mother, Frances Shafer; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Ben Kubischta, Bismarck, ND, Mitzi and Jaycin Sundheim, Minot, and Pattii and John Clemo, Arroyo Grande, CA; three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Marilyn Petrick, rural Makoti, ND, Delwin and Gail Petrick, rural Elgin, ND, and Bruce and Nyariana Petrick, Long Beach, CA; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five sisters; three sisters-in-law; one uncle, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert; father, Fred Shafer; brother, Robert Shafer; three brothers-in-law, Jeff Chigro and Elden Petrick; one sister-in-law, Clarinda Beyer.

Funeral Service: Friday, May 10, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot

Visitation: Thursday, May 9, 2002 from Noon until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: St. Paul's German Lutheran Cemetery, Makoti, ND. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2002.
