Jacob "Jack" Peterson, 67, Burlington, formerly of Carpio passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at his home, after being diagnosed with lung cancer, March 21, 2009.

Jack was born July 8, 1941, a son of Jacob and Laura (Ronningen) Peterson in Carpio. He was raised and educated in Carpio and graduated from Carpio High School in 1959. While in high school Jack was involved in basketball.

Jack entered the United States Army Reserves on February 6, 1960 and served until his honorable discharge on October 30, 1968.

On March 10, 1962, he was united in marriage to Sharron Kalmbach. From this union three children were born, Troy, Shelli and Ryan. Jack and Sharron later divorced.

Jack worked for Nash Finch Company for 26 years as a truck driver. While employed there he received several Safe Driver Awards. He also farmed for many years in the Carpio area with his brother Harold and his son, Troy, until ill health forced him to retire.

He served as Mayor of Carpio for several years, and also served on the Carpio School Board while his children attended school there.

He met Verlene Miller in the spring of 2003 and together they enjoyed camping, gardening, riding 4 wheelers at Verlene's daughter's lake cabin, going to the casinos, even on the stormiest days nothing ever stopped them. He loved watching Nascar and never missed watching a race. Jeff Gordon was his favorite driver. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren whom he dearly adored. Jack was an awesome cook, trying out different recipes and making sure everyone got fed. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Jack was baptized and confirmed at Carpio Lutheran Church, Carpio, ND.

Those who shared in his life, children, Troy (Erin) Peterson, Carpio, ND, Shelli (Bryan) Ehlke, Minot and Ryan (Heidi) Peterson, Minot; grandchildren, Tanner, Linton, ND, Blaine, SaRaya, Carter, Lauren and Nathan, all of Minot; companion, Verlene Miller, Burlington and all of her children and grandchildren; brothers, Harold (Borghild) Peterson and Lloyd (Joyce) Peterson, all of Carpio, Donald (Helen) Peterson, Berthold; sisters, Gladys Lee, Carpio, Marilyn Payne, Minot and Lois (Glen) Smith, Colorado Springs, CO; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Freeman and Marvin Peterson; brothers-in-law, Norman Lee and Red Payne; nephew, Neil Peterson.

Funeral: Monday, June 29, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at Carpio Lutheran Church, Carpio, ND.

Visitation and prayer service: Sunday, June 28, 2009 from noon to 5:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m., all at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: First Lutheran Cemetery, Carpio, ND.
