Thelma Ruth Margaret Petersen 1920 - 2004

Thelma Ruth Margaret Petersen, 83, Bowbells, died Thursday, May 20, 2004, in the Kenmare Hospital.

Thelma was born June 11, 1920, at Flaxton, ND, the daughter of Marius and Anna (Rhenstrom) Sorum. She was raised on the family farm west of Flaxton and attended Flaxton High School.

On November 5, 1939, Thelma married Orluf C. Petersen in a ceremony held on the Petersen farm that would be their home for the next 41 years. Orluf and Thelma retired in 1980 and moved to Bowbells where they resided together until Orluf's death in 2002. Thelma remained in their home until the fall of 2003, when she relocated to Kenmare Community Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility.

Thelma was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bowbells, ND, where she taught Sunday School for a number of years. She also enjoyed the preparation for the annual Lutefisk suppers. Thelma enjoyed raising a garden with vegetables and flowers, and she loved preparing food for friends and relatives for all special occasions. Thelma especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors: Daughter, Carolyn Coffey, West Covina, CA; son, Lavern Petersen and his wife Beth, Bowbells; six grandchildren, Nikki (Jeff) Marquez, Chino, CA, Robin Coffey, Fullerton, CA, and Brett Coffey, San Bernardino, CA, Gretchen Petersen and her fiancee, Mark Feland, Almont, ND, Kris and Kyle Petersen, both Bowbells, ND; two great-grandsons, Caleb Feland of Almont, ND and Mason Marquez of Chino, CA; brothers, Marvin Sorum, Kenmare, and Bruce Sorum, Bowbells; sister, Kathryn Erwin, Houston, TX; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orluf C. Petersen; her parents, Marius and Anna Sorum; brother, John Sorum and sister, Lillian Swenson.

Funeral: Monday, May 24, 2004, at 10:30 a.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bowbells, ND.

Visitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign the register Monday, one hour prior to the service in the church.

Burial: Bowbells Community Cemetery, Bowbells, ND.
