Walter Palmer 1913 - 2008 Walter was born in Bottineau, ND on September 12, 1913, a son of Charles and Ella Palmer. As a young boy the family moved to a farm north of Souris, where he attended a country school. They later moved to Westhope, ND. Walter worked odd jobs until 1941, when he went to the State School of Science, Wahpeton, ND and took a welding and automotive course. Walter joined the United States Navy the day after Pearl Harbor
was bombed. Walter was called into active duty on January 5,
1942. He served in the Southwest Pacific for a time. He returned
to the US and served at Port Hueneme, CA. While on duty in CA,
Walter met and married Bettye June Barrows December 2, 1944 in
Venture, CA. Walter went back over seas and served in the Philippines
and Borneo. He was honorably discharged October 26, 1945. Following his discharge, Walter and Bettye returned to Westhope, ND and worked for the Farmers Union for a time before starting Palmer Brothers Garage, a repair business with his brother Clark. Walter also worked at the Westhope Implement, until taking a job to help build the Minot Air Force base, working for Peter Kiewit Construction Company. Once the base project was completed, he worked for H.C. Smith upgrading missile Silos. He also had a contract with the US Postal Service, hauling mail. Walter was a member of the Westhope VFW and the Minot American
Legion. He enjoyed playing Kitten ball and ice skating. In his
later years he enjoyed gardening and fixing things. He was preceded in death by his parents, and several brothers and sisters. Visitation: Tuesday, December 23, 2008 from 9-11 am at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot Funeral Service: Tuesday at 11 am at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot Burial: In the spring of 2009 at the Westhope Cemetery, Westhope, ND. In Lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Trinity Hospice program, Minot. Officiant: Rev. Don Andrews, Chaplain, Trinity Health Music: Special CD selections Honorary Bearers: Walter's friends in the congregation today Active Casket Bearers: Larry Sitter, Calvin Sheeler, Michael Palmer, John Palmer, Chuck Palmer, Dick Severson Military honors accorded by the North Dakota Army National Guard. Immediately following the funeral service, everyone is invited to join the family for lunch and fellowship at the Knights of Columbus Clubroom, located at 2601 North Broadway. The Palmer family would like to thank everyone for the many
acts of kindness shown to them during this difficult time. Your
thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated and will never be
