Keiko Sato Otto 1933- 2010

Keiko Sato Otto PhotoKeiko Sato Otto, “Mama Kay”, 77, Minot, ND, passed away Friday, November 26, 2010, surrounded by her loving family in her daughter’s home in Minot, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Keiko Sato was born September 17, 1933, a daughter of Yoshitato and Sueno Sato, in Hokkaido, Japan. She was raised and educated in Hokkaido.

Keiko met her future husband, Albineus P. Gange while he was stationed in Japan. They were united in marriage in April of 1956, in Tokyo, Japan. She then came to the United States with her husband on September 14, 1956, and they made their home in Minot. She sacrificed the loss of her family in Japan for her new life and family in the United States of America. From this union, six children were born. They were later divorced in November of 1973.

She then married William J. Otto in June of 1976. From this union, a daughter, Michelle was born, and William’s six children became a part of their family. They later divorced in May of 1992. She then Keiko Sato Otto Photomoved to Mesa, AZ, where she worked as a personal care taker for three years. She moved back to Minot in 1996, where she enjoyed being with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and being a homemaker. 

She had many accomplishments throughout her life, but one of her proudest achievements was when she became a United States Citizen in 1979. She learned to write, read, and speak English with the help of her children.

She was a very wise, humorous, classy, loving woman. She enjoyed spending her free time playing Bingo and Black Jack. She was lovingly known by her Bingo buddies and pals as Mama Kay.

She will be well remembered by her loving family who are very thankful for the sacrifices she made for them. They include: her daughters, Jeanette (Kevin) Herrington, Minot, Kim Gange (Dean Keller), Minot, and Michelle Otto, Minot; sons, Allan J. Gange, Phoenix, AZ, John W. Gange (Sherrie Olstad), Minot, Gene R. (Darlet) Gange, Sawyer, and Kelly D. (Sharon) Gange, Minot; step-children, David (Sue) Otto, Texas, Pete Otto, Velva, Timothy (Ginger) Otto, Mandan, Billy Otto, Minot, Miriam (Russell) Keller, Minot, Barbara (Doug) Odegard, Velva, Debbie Larson, Minot; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; as well as her faithful companion dog of 4 years, Satchie, who never left her side.

Keiko was preceded in death by her parents; siblings who lived in Japan, and grandson, Dylon Dean Gange-Keller.

Memorial Service: Thursday, December 2, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot. 

Visitation:  Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. 

Memorials: are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
