Vivian M. Oster PhotoVivian M. Oster, 83, Minot, died Monday, October 31, 2011 in a Mohall nursing home.

Vivian M. Thompson was born November 15, 1927, on the family farm, near Flom, MN, the middle of nine children of Knut and Minnie (Lien) Thompson. MN. She attended rural schools and graduated from Twin Valley High School. .

In October of 1947, Vivian was united in marriage to Leo Sjolseth at the Wild Rice Lutheran Church, rural Norman County. Following their marriage, while on the honeymoon, they made Minot, ND their home. In June of 1968, Vivian was united in marriage to Melvin Oster. They lived in Minot. Melvin died in 1976. Following his death, she remained in Minot.

Vivian was the mother of eight children, and therefore very active. She not only managed the day to day operations of the home, but also worked outside of the home as a CNA at Trinity Health, and later in the housekeeping department.  Vivian was ahead of her time and worked in Health Food Centers in Minot, Billings, MT, and Salem, OR.  In later years she worked as a receptionist for Lutheran Social Services. She dearly loved this position and her co-workers.

Vivian was a former member of the Wild Rice Church of Norman County, Zion Lutheran Church and its ladies circle, and the Moose Lodge of Minot. Vivian was an avid gardener and could be found barefoot out in her yard on many occasions.  She loved her coffee and cookies, while visiting with friends and family.  She enjoyed hours of lengthy conversations talking on the telephone.  Vivian was devoted to her children, grandchildren, flowers and her home.

She is survived by:  Sons: Todd Oster, Carpio, ND, Dean Sjolseth, Billings, MT, daughters: Diane Weros, Minot, Debbie Sjolseth, Palmer, AK, Denise Gillen, Wasilla, AK, and Michelle Oster, Billings, MT;  two step-daughters: Donna Iverson, Puyallup, WA and Arlis Davick, Puyallup, WA; twenty grandchildren; eleven  great-grandchildren; brothers: Jerome Thompson, Mahnomen, MN, and Kalmer Thompson, Flom, MN; sisters: Mazel Albertson, Burbank, CA, and Eileen Fields, Kermit, TX; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and two very close family friends, Colleen Larson, Minot and Judy Haman, Surrey, ND, who were there every step of the way through her long illness.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin; son, Donald; daughter, Del Rae Perkins; brothers, Duane Thompson, Clayton Thompson and Arlo Thompson; sister, Ethel Boole; and two grandchildren.

Visitation:  Thursday, November 3, 2011 from 2-7 at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot

Funeral Service:  Friday, November 4, 2011 at 2  pm at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot

Burial:  Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot
