John Opitz 1918- 2006

John Opitz, 88, Minot, formerly of Kenmare, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, in a Minot adult foster care home.

John was born April 7, 1918 in Elmdale Township, Ward County, rural Kenmare, ND, the son of John and Ida (Hagen) Opitz. He attended Elmdale country school and Kenmare High School where he graduated in 1936.

John entered the United States Army on February 6, 1942 and served during World War II in Iceland. He then served with General George Patton's Third Army in Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged on October 1, 1945. Following his discharge he returned to Kenmare.

On August 26, 1946 John married Audrey Harris. He worked at Ringen Hardware and Company in Kenmare and later moved to Minot where he worked at I. Keating Furniture World. John then became a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service where he worked until his retirement.

John was a member of the Moose Lodge, Minot, and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, both in Kenmare.

Survivors: Daughters, Sharon (Sandy) Davidson, Pontiac, MO, Janice "Tootsie" (Mike) Perry, Osburn, ID, and Janie Dee Myers, Long Beach, CA; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister, Marian Kolbo, Mohall; brother, Jim Opitz, Kennewick, WA; several nieces and nephews also survive.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey; his parents, John and Ida Opitz; brother, Clifford Opitz, and sister, Arliss Couey.

Graveside service: A private graveside service will be held at a later time at St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery, Kenmare, ND.
