Robert D. Olson 1933 - 2007 Robert Delano Olson was born April 22, 1933 in Noonan, ND, the son of Reuben and Evva (Barden) Olson. As a child he moved with his family to Minot and attended Roosevelt Elementary School and Minot High School. Robert enlisted in the United States Army June 29, 1950 at the age of 17 and served on the front line with the Army Infantry for 11 months during the Korean Conflict. While in the service he was awarded a Purple Heart, the Presidential Citation with 4 battle stars, along with other medals. He was honorably discharged August 20, 1952 and returned to North Dakota. On August 12, 1953 Robert married the former Ardis Fuchs at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Minot. They made their home in Minot where Robert worked various jobs. From 1958 to 1960 he worked as a Ward County Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Olaf Haaland. He than began employment at Midwest Motor Express where he became assistant manager, working there for 17 years. He owned and operated Olson Transfer for 15 years. Robert then earned his insurance license and opened Midwest Insurance Agency which he owned and operated until April of 1993 when he sold the business and retired. Following retirement Bob and Ardis enjoyed many winters in Bullhead City, AZ. Robert was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot and served as usher at the church for a number of years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Minot, where he enjoyed playing in the pool league. He was a 49+ year member at the 515 Club in Minot. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, the Elks Lodge, the Eagles Aerie and the YMCA Health Club. He played basketball at the YMCA for many years and spent most of his noon hours there playing basketball. He also enjoyed playing fast pitch softball and was a pitcher for over 35 years, including pitching with the Young America team in the regional and national tournaments. He took up the game of golf at the age of 52. Those who shared in his life, Wife, Ardis, Minot; children, Terry (Joan) Olson, Eden Prairie, MN, Kimberly (Keith) Vosseteig, Dawsonville, GA, Nancy Olson, Yakima, WA, Jeffrey (Tracy) Olson, Grass Valley, CA and Penny (Tim) Chole, Minot; five grandchildren, Sara Olson, Laura, Jordan and Chelsea Olson and Kelly Vosseteig; brother, Nick (Marvonne) Olson, Minot; sisters, Doretta Johnson, Santa Cruz, CA, Betty (Hank) Anderson, Minot, Mary Lou (Bob) Esterby, Minot and special sister-in-law, Mary Olson, Minot; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Jim Olson. Funeral: Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at 9:00 a.m. at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot. Visitation and vigil prayer service: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign the register Monday, July 16, 2007, from noon to 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home and from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church with the vigil prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND. Memorials are preferred to St. John the Apostle Building Fund or to the donor's choice.
