Oscar I. Olson 1918 - 2008 Oscar I. Olson was born October 21, 1918, a son of Lars and Emma (Togstad) Olson in Maddock, ND. He was raised and educated in Maddock. Oscar joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1940 and was stationed in Kenmare, ND. He enlisted in the United States Army October 1, 1942 and was stationed on the island of Attu from 1943 to 1945. He proudly served his country during WWII and was honorably discharged October 21, 1945. Oscar was united in marriage to Jean Roberts August 29, 1953, in Oberon, ND. They made their home in Minot. Oscar was self educated in the operation of automatic transmissions of all automobiles. He was the founder of Smitty's Repair in Minot and Smitty's Transmission Service in Grand Forks, ND, with his wife, Jean. He retired on January 1, 1981, and spent the next 27 winters at his Mesa, Arizona, home. He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church, Minot, and Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Mesa, AZ. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #753, and the Pup Tent 12. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #26, Cooties, Last Man's Club, Eagles Aerie, and Elks Lodge, all of Minot. He was a member of the Garrison Country Club and a charter member of the Fountain of Sun Country Club, Mesa, AZ. In Oscar's early years, he enjoyed fishing and camping with his family and friends. In his retirement years, he enjoyed golfing both in Garrison and in Arizona. He also enjoyed using the computer and the electronic technology of today's world. Surviving family includes: wife of 54 years, Jean, Minot;
son, Duane Olson, Maddock, ND; daughter, Deb Evans-Olson and
her husband, Scott Olson, Lincoln, NE; 6 grandchildren, Allison
Evans, Ron Olson, Neil Olson, Eric Olson, CherLynn Olson, and
James Olson; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Esther Johnsen,
Grand Forks, ND, and Thelma Paulson, Minot; Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kenneth; daughter-in-law, Janice Olson; sister, Ruby Olson; brother, Lloyd Olson, and two infant brothers. Funeral: Saturday, July 26, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at
