Lydia E. Olson, 101, Velva, died Saturday, May 21, 2005, at the Souris Valley Care Center, Velva, ND.

Lydia was born December 23, 1903 to Edward and Emma (Brorby) Haga at Northwood, ND. The second oldest of five children, she came to the Bergen Community as a child, about two years old, to the home that had been established by Emma and Edward Haga and his father Lars. A homestead hut was their home while the big house was being built.

Lydia married Orvin Olson on June 11, 1926 in Minot, ND. Witnesses were Alma Haga Ellison and Herbie Olson. They were united in marriage by Pastor C.J. Carlson. Following their marriage they lived on the home place, three miles north of Bergen, which had been homesteaded by Orvin's parents, Ole and Betsy Olson. Together they lived and worked hard on the farm, engaging in diversified farming. Their turkey business of 60 years gave them notoriety far and wide. Lydia attended rural school near her home and upon entering eighth grade, she enrolled in Bergen school and graduated from Bergen High School in 1924.

Lydia took great pride in her home and especially spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Lydia was an avid basketball fan,, taking in games of her children and grandchildren as well as watching the pros on T.V. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Bulls, traveling to Colorado to see the Bulls play the Denver Nuggets. Lydia had her own team as well, known as G'ma's Boyz, made up of her grandsons. This team played annually in the Grand-Am tournament in Grand Forks for the past twelve years with Grandma there cheering them on.

She enjoyed playing whist and traveling to the casinos with her family. She was currently a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva, and a former member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, rural Bergen, ND, and Hjerdahl Lutheran Church, Voltaire, where she was confirmed. She was a member of the Velva Senior Citizens and the Lake Hester Club.

Her door was always open for family and friends to visit. She was known for her sense of humor and good nature.
