Elmer Olson• 1918 - 2011 Elmer Kristian Olson was born on September 24, 1918, a son of Ole A. and Helena (Bukkplass) Olson on the family farm, Thorson Township, Burke County, ND. He was raised and educated in the Burke County area. On February 10, 1940, Elmer was united in marriage to Gladys Heggestad. They made their home on a farm near McGregor, ND, where Elmer raised cattle, small grains, sold farm machinery and hauled coal. They spent several winters in Columbus and McGregor, ND, while the children were in school. He never officially “retired” from farming. Elmer assisted with duties on the farm well into his 80’s. In the early 1980’s, Elmer and Gladys moved to Minot. Gladys died July 29, 2008. Elmer continued to reside in Minot until his death. He was a member of the Minot Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge and the Eagles Club. Elmer enjoyed visiting, telling jokes, playing cards, dancing, hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed spending time with children. Elmer was proud of his Norwegian heritage. He graciously welcomed and opened his home to all friends and family. Elmer was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and friend, and will be missed by all that knew him. Those who had the privilege of sharing his life: Daughters: Ardella (Kermit) Holte, McGregor, ND, Gloria Gunderson, Marysville, WA, and Ardis (Edwin) Kirchgessner, Sedro Woolley, WA; grandchildren: Monte Olson, Mitchell Olson, Melissa Philipp, Melverne Olson, Nathan Holte, Sheldon Holte, Steven Holte, Sheri Reab, Natalie Crampton, Bryan Johnson, and Valerie Smith; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister: Alice Running Kessler, Beulah, ND; sister-in-law: Lucille Olson, Minot; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys Olson; son, Orrin Olson; brothers, Olaf and Melvin Olson; sisters, Thelma, Helga and Inga. Visitation: Wednesday, March 9, 2011 from 4-7 at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot Funeral Service: Thursday, March, 10, 2011 at 10:30 am at Faith United Methodist Church, Minot Graveside service: A graveside service will take place at a later date in the spring of 2011 at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, McGregor, ND. Officiant: Rev. Deborah Ball-Kilbourn Music Honorary Bearers: Elmer’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren Active Bearers: Ivan Vandeberg, Dean DeMoe, DJ Maruskie, Shannon Maruskie, Steven Overlee, Tom McGregor Immediately following the funeral service, there will be lunch and fellowship at the Moose Lodge, located at 400 9th St SW.
