Richard "Bud" Olson 1923 - 2005

Richard C. "Bud" Olson, 82, 115-6th St. NW, Minot, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, of natural causes in his home.

He was born May 17, 1923, on the family farm north of Guthrie, ND, a son of Clarence T. and Rose M. (Beutler) Olson. The family moved to Minot where he was raised and educated. As a boy, he worked as a newspaper salesman. Later, in high school, he worked for Western Fruit Express, servicing the Great Northern Railway's Empire Builder air conditioning facility. He graduated from Minot High School in 1942, and in February 1943, during World War II, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served in Europe and earned the distinguished unit badge with one oak leaf cluster.

Following his discharge in 1945, he returned to Minot and began employment with the Great Northern. In 1947, he suffered an injury in a train accident. A year later, he became a partner in B&B Plumbing in Minot. He remained in the business for 25 years, retiring in 1973.

On Oct. 18, 1952, he married Alice Lorraine "Sis" Pratt at First Lutheran Church in Minot, where they continued to make their home.

Richard was virtually a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Minot. He was confirmed there, married there and maintained his membership there. He also held a life membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, was a member of the American Legion and a former member of the Moose and Eagles lodges.

After he retired from the plumbing business, he continued to be of assistance to people with plumbing problems, offering advice and being helpful in other ways. He started collecting and tinkering with clocks as a hobby. His favorite sport was his motorcycle - a vehicle on which he became a skilled and daring rider. His brother Jim said, "He was just a good guy."
