Sophie O'Clair 1941 - 2009

Sophie O'Clair passed away on Friday, April 3, 2009 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Her funeral will be Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 2pm at the Nazareth Lutheran Church with viewing from noon until service time at the church

Sophie was born February 17, 1941 in Kenmare, North Dakota to Silas and Christine (Jelsing) Vooge. She attended rural grade school in Crowfoot Township and graduated from Kenmare High School. Following her graduation in 1959, she attended Minot State Teachers College and obtained her teaching certificate. She taught grade school for a short time in Tioga, North Dakota. In January of 1963, she married Glenn O'Clair in Minot, North Dakota.

Sophie was an active member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school, was a member of the Ruth Circle and participated in the Quilting club at the church.

Sophie was also active in the community. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, active in the Circle and Swing Square dance club and a member of the Spencer Baden Farmers Union. She often participated in taking various bus trips to points of interest in the state that the Farmers Union offered. She also worked at the Senior Citizens Center making lunches and cleaning facilities.

Sophie also had an active home life. She was a dedicated farm wife which included cooking and delivering meals for her family as they tended to their farm duties outside of Kenmare. For several years she grew her own vegetables and flowers by having a garden in town and on the farm. She also provided outside child care for several years. In later years she enjoyed putting puzzles together, playing Bingo and playing scrabble on the internet.

Sophie also had many personal hobbies including sewing her own clothes for her and clothes for her family, embroidery, crocheting doilies, making afghans and other crafts. She also had a love for animals including the most recent, Zeus, a cocker spaniel from the Minot Humane Society.

Sophie could always be counted on for keeping in contact with relatives and friends and making visits to those in the hospital. She will be missed dearly.

Sophie was preceded in death by her husband Glenn, and parents Silas and Christine Vooge, nephew David and great niece Cassidy Jane She is survived by sons, Brent, Phoenix, AZ , Dan and companion Fred Bach, Phoenix AZ, companion Tom Lang, Kenmare, ND, sister Darlene (Roger) Vesey, Plaza, ND, niece Peggy (Kyle) Bauer and their children Ally and Alexis, Berthold, ND, and nephew Joey (Emily)Vesey, and their children Arlo and Morgan. Grassy Butte, ND.

Immediately following the funeral service there will be lunch and fellowship in the lower level of the church.
