Dr. Verne L. Nyre 1923 - 2007 Verne was born Aug. 4, 1923, in Minot, a son of Roy and Rose (Gilmore) Nyre. Raised in Minot, he graduated from Minot High School, attended Minot State University and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks before enrolling in the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. Verne received his optometry degree in 1946 and returned to Minot where he opened his own practice. Verne interrupted his college education to serve in the Army during World War II. On June 18, 1949, Verne married Theresa Bohn in Minot and have always made their home in Minot. Active in the community, he was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church. He held a life membership in and was a past president of the North Dakota Optometric Association. He also held life memberships in the Minot Elks Lodge and the Knights of Columbus and was a Fourth Degree member of the KCs. He was a charter member of the Minot Exchange Club and a former member of the Eagles Lodge and the American Legion. Golf was his game, and Verne played it at the Minot Country Club where he and his wife were members. He played cards, too, and was especially fond of bridge and enjoyed reading. Verne had an affable personality, a good sense of humor and was known for his quick wit. He'd say things like, you can turn on a dime and still have 8 cents in change when driving his motorized wheelchair. Verne was deaf in one ear, so consequently he had trouble following conversations, so more times then not he could be heard saying: "What the _____ are we talking about now?" The family emblazoned the phrase on a tee shirt for him. Verne retired in 2000, and in retirement, spent volunteer hours at the information desk of Trinity West. He would also continue to stop into the office and check up on things.
