Mary M. Nowak 1920 - 2009 Mary Margaret McDonald was born June 22, 1920 in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Bartholomew and Mary (Logan) McDonald. She was raised and educated in Edinburgh, from a family of eight. During World War II, while working in England, Mary met Chester L. Nowak who was serving with the United States Army Air Corps. Following his discharge from the service he returned to North Dakota and Mary came to the United States in December of 1947. Mary married Chester on February 7, 1948 at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Minot. Following their marriage they made their home in Minot. Mary worked at Kresge's for five years and later worked as a housekeeper for many local families after Terri was in Junior High School. Mary was very proud of her Scottish heritage and made three trips back to Scotland. Her first trip was alone in 1950, to see family. In 1958 she brought her daughter, Terri and in 1982 her husband went with. In 1985 she suffered a stroke which slowed her down a little. Mary enjoyed doing word search puzzles, reading, playing bingo, knitting and crocheting afghans, scarfs and baby booties. Her husband Chester died on April 21, 1992. In early 2005 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Mary was loved and will be missed by all who new her. Mary was a charter member of Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot, the Confraternity of Christian Mothers and was also a member of the Elkettes. Those who shared in her life, daughter, Theresa "Terri" and her husband, Lenus "Lenny" Krebs, Minot; three grandchildren, Lindsay, Brian "BJ", and Jennifer and her fiancé, Brandon Beeter; three great-grandchildren, Kendall Krebs, Peyton and Maxwell Beeter; brother, Bert McDonald and sister, Rose Duncan, both in Scotland; special neighbor, Shelley Harstad, Minot and special cousin, Betty Brown and her family in Canada; numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Chester; her parents, Bartholomew and Mary; brothers, Alex and Patrick McDonald; sisters, Nora McDonald, Nan McDonald and Helen "Nellie" Illand; brothers-in-law, Patrick Illand, Tommy Duncan, Joe Nowak, Raymond Nowak and Ludwig Nowak; sisters-in-law, Margaret McDonald, Ella McMaster, Mattie McDonald, Bess Nowak and Margaret Nowak; nephew, James Nowak. Funeral: Monday, May 11, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot. Visitation and vigil prayer service: Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m. with the vigil prayer service Sunday at 5:00, all at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.
