Leo S. Niess 1930 - 2011 Leo Sebastian Niess was born December 16, 1930 in Balta, ND to Frank and Elizabeth (Stach) Niess. He was raised on the family farm and attended school through the sixth grade. He was once married to Barbara Schneider. They married on October 6, 1953, and to this union three sons were born. They farmed in the Balta area until moving to Minot in 1958. Leo worked for Minot Foundry, Minot Sash and Door, and other construction and cabinet jobs before starting Leo’s Cabinet Shop a custom cabinet business in 1963. He owned and operated the cabinet shop for 25 years when he sold the business to his son in 1985 and retired due to health reasons. Leo was a past member of the Eagles Aerie, the Elks Lodge, the Moose Lodge and the Knights of Columbus where he served as a Fourth Degree Knight, all in Minot. He volunteered over 5,000 hours at Trinity Hospital, Trinity Homes and at the Norsk Hostfest. He enjoyed painting wildlife and landscapes, woodcarving and performing with the Bill Merck Band. Leo always had a story and thousands of jokes to share. He performed a Stand Up Comedy Act for private parties and conventions. Those who shared in his life, Sons, David (Brenda) Niess, and Dwight Niess, all of Minot, and Kevin and his partner Starr Moore, Honolulu, Hawaii; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; brothers, Frank, Minot, Henry (Donna), Williston, Eugene (Sharon), Minot, Edward (Helen) Niess, Sawyer, ND and Dennis (Ann), Greenbay, WI; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and his friend and companion, Vi Murray, Minot. Leo was preceded in death his parents, infant brother, Peter, sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and Tony Garman; niece, Vickie Haug and sister-in-law, Eleanor Neiss. Funeral: Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND. Visitation: Monday, September 26, 2011, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND. Memorials are preferred to Our Savior Lutheran Church, Minot, ND, or to an organization of the donor’s choice.
