James "Jim" Raymond Nichols 1928 - 2010 Jim was born June 4, 1928 to Raymond and Dora (Houle) Nichols on the family farm rented by his parents west of Berthold. In the fall of 1931 Jim’s parents purchased a farm southwest of Berthold where he was raised along with his siblings. While growing up Jim loved the outdoors and being around horses and cattle. He attended a country school southeast of the farm and attended high school at St. Leo’s in Minot while working part time. Jim also attended Minot Business College where he met his future wife Sharon Cochran; he left college and went back to the farm to work with his dad. On January 6, 1955 Jim married Sharon Cochran and began their life on the farm where he grew up and began raising their eight children. Jim bought the farm from his parents in 1967. He farmed, raised cattle, sheep, sold Vigortone premixes for livestock and sold livestock handling equipment. In the mid-1980’s he rented the farmland out and continued to raise cattle and sheep. Before he retired he sold the sheep and put the cattle out on shares. In 1996 Jim retired from farming and ranching, sold the farm and moved to Berthold.
