Raymond Newman, 96, Minot, ND, formerly of rural Sawyer, ND, died Monday, June 15, 2009, at ManorCare in Minot.

Raymond J. Newman was born October 17, 1912, in Newman Township of Ward County, 14 miles from Sawyer, ND, the son of Herman and Minnie (Seney) Newman. He was the middle child born, having three older brothers, two younger sisters, and one younger brother. He was raised on the family farm and attended a one-room country school located one and a half miles from the farm. When Raymond was eight years old, his mother passed away, and he was given the responsibility of assisting his father with the day to day operation of the farm.

Raymond was united in marriage to Ruby V. Irwin October 8, 1934, in Minot. They were married by the same Justice of the Peace (Judge William Murray) that married Raymond's parents. They settled on a homestead located in Newman Township of Ward County, 15 miles southeast of Minot. They farmed small grains and raised livestock. They lived on the farm until moving into Minot in 1996. In 2005, they moved into Brentmoor for a short time before residing at ManorCare Health Services. Ruby passed away March 1, 2007. Raymond continued to reside at ManorCare Health Services until the time of his death.

He was a member of First Assembly of God Church, Minot. He was a former member of the Calvary Chapel, rural Sawyer, where he had taught Sunday school for number of years. He was also served as a member of the Calvary Chapel Church Board, Sawyer School Board and the Newman Township Board.

Everything Raymond and Ruby did, they did together. They were the "perfect" couple. Raymond was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who was known for his wonderful sense of humor and his one-liners. He had a passion and devotion to the land he farmed, and enjoyed visiting with his neighbors, family and many friends, giving haircuts and drinking coffee.

His loving family includes: children, Joyce Keil and her husband, Paul, Park River, ND, Rich Newman and his wife, Donna, and Jim Newman and his wife, Joann, all of rural Sawyer, ND; grandchildren, Tim (Rebecca) Keil and their children, Matthew, Nichole, Austin, Olivia, and Tristan; Tami Jo (Kevin) Alm and their children, Elli, Lexi, and Griffin; Daniel (May) Newman and their son, Cody; Rhonda (Dallas) Weishaar and their children, Paige, Easton, Regan, and Kennedy; Joel (Karmell) Newman and their children, Jaylen, Ashtyn, and Carter; and Jay (Marcie) Newman and their children, Hannah, Luke, and Adam; sisters-in-law, Blanche Newman (Ralph's wife), Northwood, ND, and Mildred Newman, (Gerald's wife) Minot; and many nieces and nephews;

Raymond was preceded in death by his mother, father, and step-mother, Mabel; wife of 72 years, Ruby; brothers, Walter, Howard, Ralph, and Gerald; and sisters, Edna Tofstad and Evelyn Fjeld.
