Olga Marie Newman • 1914 - 2010

Olga Marie Newman, 96, Minot, formerly of the Ruso-Velva area died peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday November 24, 2010 at Trinity Hospital.

Olga was born October 25, 1914, at Hillsboro, ND, the daughter of John and Anna Heggem. She was baptized in the Lutheran church in Hillsboro and confirmed in the Ruso Lutheran church. She was baptized in 1971 in the Minot United Pentecostal Church and was presently a member there. She was educated in the country schools. Olga worked as a house keeper in Barton and worked for the threshers in the cook car. She married Ernest and became a farmer’s wife and mother, keeping busy with chickens, gardening, and milking cows. She often interpreted for young Norwegian families.

Olga was united in marriage to Ernest Newman March 19, 1933 in Velva, ND. They made their home south of Velva where they farmed and raised farm animals. Six children were born to this marriage. Farming was started with horses pulling the machines. When tractors started to make the work easier and quicker it also posed problems when it wouldn’t stop when told to stop with a whoa. Olga and Virgil moved to Minot from the farm in 2006.

Her loving family included Ernest of 38 years, 1 daughter:  Eilene (George) Emly Minot ND, 5 sons: Elmo (Alice Wetmore) Newman, Minot, ND Virgil Newman, Minot, ND, Vernon Newman, Robert Newman and Harold (Jolene Kostenko) Newman. There are 6 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren. Those who have preceded Olga in death are her parents, husband, Ernest; sons, Elmo, Vernon, Robert and Harold; son-in-law George Emly.

Olga was also preceded in death by siblings: Conrad, Ben (Marie), Hilda Halsengard, Agnes (Otto,) Skoglund, Melvin (Olive), Joseph, Morris, Magnes (Barbara), Louise(Jack) Martin, Gladys(Leonard) Egerdal.

Funeral:  Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Apostolic Faith Church, Minot, ND.

Visitation and prayer service:  Visitation Monday, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Burial:  Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Velva Cemetery, Velva, ND.
