Ruth E. Nelson 1906 - 2004

Ruth E. Nelson, 97, longtime resident of the Flaxton and Bowbells, ND, areas died Sunday, January 11, 2004, at the Kenmare hospital.

Ruth was born on September 9, 1906, at Zumbrota, MN, the youngest of three children of James Tenney Fuller and Sarah Pearl (Clark) Fuller. Her father was a schoolteacher and they lived in several areas but she spent most of her growing up years in Ellendale, ND. She attended Ellendale Normal School and then taught school.

Later she worked as a social worker in Burke County, where she met her future husband Dan Nelson. They planned to be married in the later 1930's, but the marriage was delayed several years when Ruth became ill with tuberculosis. She spent three years as a patient in San Haven near Dunseith, ND, and then worked there as a telephone operator while completing her treatment. She and Dan were married November 7, 1945, in Jamestown, ND. They lived on a farm between Flaxton and Bowbells where they raised polled Hereford cattle and a son, Donald.

When Dan suffered a stroke in 1992, he and Ruth moved to the Baptist Home in Kenmare. She continued to live there after his death in 1995.

Ruth had a God given talent to find joy and contentment in any circumstance.

She enjoyed playing the piano and singing hymns. She was a regular at church and community affairs. Before her health failed she loved to visit shut-ins and the sick who would otherwise lack company.

Survivors: son, Donald Nelson and his wife Mary Anne, Cedar Rapids, IA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death her husband, parents, her sister, Lois Brokaw and brother, H. Clark Fuller.

Her family is grateful to the wonderful folks at United Lutheran Church in Flaxton ,Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bowbells, the Baptist Home and the Kenmare Hospital who were her friends. The family would also like to thank Beverly and Ervin Schultz for their loving and kind care of Ruth.

Ruth's wishes were to donate her body to the University Of North Dakota's Anatomical Gift Program.
