Esther Lillian Nelson, 90, Flaxton, died Friday, January 9, 2009, in Trinity Hospital, Minot, North Dakota.

Esther Lillian Johnson was born April 19, 1918, to Karl Gottfred and Della Mae (Bogges) Johnson. She grew up on the family farm at Long Creek Divide County, North Dakota with her sisters, Mary, Edna, Agnes, and her brother, Carl. In her youth, she learned to love reading the Bible and playing her violin. She graduated from Crosby High School in 1936, and then attended and graduated from Minot Teachers College after which, she taught at a rural school in North Dakota.

She married Raymond Arthur Nelson on September 8, 1940, in Portland, Oregon, where she resided for several years. Then they returned to North Dakota to farm in the Lignite/Flaxton area, where they raised their nine children. In the 1960s, she began an in depth study of the Bible. She was baptized as a Jehovah's Witness July 17, 1970. Esther loved to talk about the Bible and loved all people. Her beloved husband, Raymond, passed away in 1974.

She is survived by her nine children: Ila Rae Maki, Arva Kae Walters, Dale Arnold Nelson, Oren Kenneth Nelson, Ona Faa Nelson, Eddy Dean Nelson, Coni Lee Evans, Mari Lyn Koreski, and Don Carlos Nelson. Also surviving and thriving are 18 grandchildren: Julie, John, Karin, Brian, Steve, Dawn, Brenda, Amie, Dan, Leslie, Donna, Heather, Paul, Micheal, Maria, Christopher, Elizabeth and Lillian. older sister, Mary Svangstu; There are also 28 great grandchildren: Kristi, Brittnee, Katie, Brianna, Mercedes, Brandy, Aaron, Annika, Matthew, Zoe, Toby, DeNaye, Ashley, Charlie, Clay, Brooke, Heather, David, Ethan, Alyssa, Ciara, Micah, Isaac, Ashlyn, Aidan, Jacob, Elyse, Conner, and 4 great-great grandsons: Jonathen, Jackzon, Alex, Bradley.

Esther Lillian Nelson was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; parents, Karl and Della Johnson, and her sisters, Agnes Haugland and Edna Nelson, as well as her brother Carl Johnson.

Visitation: Wednesday, January 14, 2009 from 2-6 at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Powers Lake, ND.

Funeral Service: Thursday, January 15, 2009 at 2 pm at the Powers Lake Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses Church, Powers Lake. Reception to follow at the Senior Citizen Center.

Burial: Bethlehem Danish Cemetery, Bowbells, ND in the spring of 2009.

Immediately following the funeral service there will be lunch and fellowship at the Powers Lake Senior Citizens Center. Due to inclement weather, the committal service will take place at a later time in the spring of 2009.

The Nelson family would like to thank everyone for the many acts of kindness shown to them during this difficult time. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten.
