Ernest "Ernie"
Milton Nelson 1920 -
2007 He was born on June 29, 1920, in Minot, ND, the son of John G. and Ida C. (Nordstrom) Nelson. He was raised north of Ruso, ND and attended rural school thru the 8th grade and then attended Velva High School graduating in 1941. Ernie started farming the family farmstead in 1932, after his father's death. He entered the United States Army Air Force on December 15, 1942. He was honorably discharged on July 10, 1944. After his discharge, Ernie returned to ND and continued farming until he started working construction. Ernie married Jean Muus on December 17, 1944, in Velva. Starting in 1948, Ernie worked as a supervisor on numerous highway projects. In 1962, Ernie started Ernie Nelson Construction Company in Velva a company he owned and operated until his death. Jean died on July 14, 1991. Ernie was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva City Commission, McHenry County Commission, Association of General Contractors and the Land Improvement Contractors of America. He was a life member of American Legion Post #39 in Velva and the Minot Elks Lodge. Survivors: sons, John M. (Jan) Nelson, Minot, and Mark J. (Sandra) Nelson, Hazen; daughter, Mary N. Grossman, Velva; eight grandchildren Nicolette and Kristin Nelson, Dallas, Lee, Emily Grossman, Katie (Steve) Gendreau, Erin (Brandon) Hancock, Daniel Nelson,; four great-grandchildren, Hudson, Breck and Owan Gendreau and Hadley Hancock; sister, Florence (Larry) Flatla, Bergen, ND; brothers-in-law, John Muus, Velva, Robert (Trudy) Muus, Lompoc, CA, and David (Barbara) Muus, Kelso, WA; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Smith, Norwalk, CA, Sue Muus, Las Vegas, NV and Myrna Nelson, Minot; special friend, Fran Loftesnes, Minot; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, parents, John and Ida, sister, Ruth Fadness, brothers, Leslie and Willard Nelson, brothers-in-law, Kermit Fadness, Jim Cummins and Melvin Muus and sisters-in-law, Jenell Cummins and Audrey Muus. Funeral Service: Thursday, August 2, 2007, at 2 p.m.
