Delmer Nelson PhotoDelmer B. Nelson, 81, Kenmare, ND, died Saturday, January 16, 2010 in his home.

Delmer was born February 22, 1928 in Kenmare, ND, to Edward and Elna (Nelson) Nelson.  He was baptized and confirmed at Elmdale Lutheran Church, Niobe, ND, he attended country school in Elmdale Township and also attended Kenmare High School for 2 ½ years.

On January 11, 1953 Delmer married Marion Thiel at Elmdale Lutheran Church, Niobe, ND.  Following their marriage they made their home on a farm in Elmdale Township, Ward County, where he farmed and raised cattle his entire life.  He co-owned the International Harvester dealership in Kenmare with Eskil Swenson and Carl Sauer from 1964 to 1978.  For 17 years, Delmer and his wife Marion operated Farm Comfort Bed and Breakfast.

Delmer served as the Gooseneck Soil Conservation Director for 15 years.  He also served as Director on the Kenmare Hospital Board and Hospital Association.  He was a member of Elmdale Lutheran Church and served on the church board.  He served on the Kenmare School Board for 9 years and was a past president.

His passion was his farming and raising Hereford cattle.  He enjoyed keeping some old time “farming practices” alive, especially having his own Sunday afternoon grain cutting with the binder, then shocking it and finally finishing off the  afternoon of threshing with friends complimented with an “old time” lunch.

His grandchildren were especially important and special to him as was his Swedish heritage and in whom he tried to instill his Swedish roots by teaching them numerous Swedish words.

He was a jokester and loved nothing more than having a good joke to tell as well as meeting new people.

Those who shared in his life, his loving wife of 57 years, Marion, Kenmare; daughter, Onamae (James) Richardson, Portland, OR, and their sons, Reese and Neal; sons, Orlan (Diane) Nelson, Kenmare, and their daughter, Keri; and Lyndon (Rebecca) Nelson, Kenmare, and their daughters, Lyndsie, Halie and Katie; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and several relatives in Sweden survive.
