Bertha Nelson, 82, Kenmare, ND, formerly of Flaxton, ND, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Trinity Hospital, Minot.

Bertha Ada Nygaard was born January 6, 1927, the daughter of Anton and Bernice (Jackson) Nygaard on the Bratsberg family farm located southwest of Portal, ND. She was raised and educated in the Portal and Lignite area. Bertha was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church of Lignite.

On May 17, 1947, Bertha married Floyd Nelson in the First Lutheran Church in Lignite. They lived near Flaxton, until Floyd started managing grain elevators in Flaxton, Greene, and Westby, MT.

In 1964, Floyd and Bertha began farming north of Flaxton. Through the years Bertha was involved in 4-H leadership, decorated wedding cakes, and was active with the United Lutheran Church in Flaxton and the American Legion Auxiliary. They farmed for 40 years in the Burke County and in 2004, retired and moved to Kenmare, ND.

Her loving family includes: husband of 62 years, Floyd, Kenmare; sons, David (Joan) Nelson, Minot, and Barry (Pam) Nelson, Flaxton; daughters, Connie (Bill) Arnold, Casper, WY, and Tammi (Ron) Kalmbach, Lignite;13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Kostad, Minot, and Violet (George) Bauer, Kenmare; sister-in-law, Berniece Nygaard, Portal; and several nieces and nephews.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Bernice Nygaard; infant son, Dean Floyd; and brother, Leonard Nygaard.

Funeral: Saturday, April 11, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bowbells.

Interment: Flaxton Cemetery, Flaxton, ND, at a later date in the spring.

Visitation: Friday from 4 to 7 pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare.

Memorials are preferred to the Assisted Living Baptist Home of Kenmare, and Flaxton United Cemetery Association.

Immediately following the funeral service, please join the family for a time of fellowship and lunch in the fellowship hall. The graveside service will take place at a later date in the spring.
