Adolph J. Myren 1909 - 2003 Adolph J. Myren, 94, Lignite, ND, died Saturday, September 6, 2003, at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva, ND. Adolph was born July 30, 1909 in Flaxton, ND, the son of N. John and Inga (Jacobson) Myren. He was raised in the Flaxton area and educated at School #2 Dale Township located next to the farm. On August 21, 1943, he married Louise Marie Home, in Plentywood, Montana. Adolph ran a pool hall in Neche, ND and farmed with his father prior to entering the United States Army on November 18, 1942. Adolph was stationed in the Philippine Islands and the West Pacific during World War II. Adolph received several medals while in the Army with a couple special awards being the Good Conduct Medal and another being a Presidential Unit Citation for leading the first American assault infantrymen into the Jap homeland. He was honorably discharged November 15, 1945 and they returned to North Dakota where they lived on the family farm south of Flaxton, ND. Adolph and Louise lived on the family farm in the summer and moved their family to town during the winter months as Adolph drove school bus and Louise taught school. Adolph wore many hats as a farmer, carpenter and school bus driver. Adolph worked very hard on the farm and always found the energy to keep moving. Adolph was bothered with arthritis and when the Doctor told him at the age of 60 that a sedentary life style would lead to a wheelchair, he decided to build a new home on the farm. In 1987 Adolph and Louise moved to Minot but as you all know they drove to the farm several times a week. Louise passed away October 30, 1998. Adolph was very quiet, but once he was left alone he started sharing many stories and enjoyed spending time with his daughters and grandchildren. Adolph was still attending school functions at the age of 91 and several people knew him as Grandpa. Adolph continued to live in Minot and more recently entered the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva. Adolph was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Lignite and the Flaxton American Legion. Adolph served several years on the church council and Dale Township board. The building of Christ Lutheran Church in Lignite was a very important project for Adolph to work on. Adolph was respected by his family and friends throughout life; however, he won the hearts of those who cared for him at the Souris Valley Care Center. We will miss Dad, but we all remember special times and hold them dear in our hearts. You all have your own special memories but the one we hear from others the most is "We always saw Adolph driving down the road with his hat on."
