Ione Mosser 1931 - 2005

Ione Mosser, 73, Voltaire, ND, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at a Velva nursing home.

Ione Mabel Mantei was born at home on July 24, 1931, the second oldest of Robert and Mabel (Wilkinson) Mantei's seven children. She grew up on the farm by Fortuna, ND during the Depression; attended grade school in Fortuna, and high school in Crosby. She always knew that education would be her way to a better future, so after graduation she taught at a country school for one year, earning enough money to begin nurse's training. Ione attended the Trinity School of Nursing in Minot, graduating with a Registered Nurse (RN) degree in 1952. During her nurses training, she had begun correspondence with a young serviceman, also from the Fortuna area, and after working at Trinity Hospital for one year, became the bride of Frank Mosser.

They began their life together at Warren AFB, Cheyenne, WY, where their first child was born. After Frank's discharge from the Air Force in 1955, they returned to the Fortuna area to pursue Frank's love of farming. After they were blessed with their 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th child, with the 6th on the way, they decided to look for a larger farming/dairy operation. That search resulted in a move to a farm east of Bergen, ND in 1964. Even with the birth of their 7th, 8th, and 9th child, Ione and Frank always found time to play with their children and introduce them to the world around them through travel to the surrounding states and Canada. Not only did Ione manage a home and nine lively children, she always had a large garden, did lots of canning and baking, sewed clothes for her children (especially for her girls and their dolls), and was indispensable out in the field and the dairy barn.

The dairy operation was expanded in 1973 to accommodate the growing family and continued until 1992, when they retired from farming and dairy. Around 1990, after being away from the nursing profession for 38 years, Ione took a courageous step and began a home correspondence program to renew her RN license. She then worked as an RN at Souris Valley Care Center, Velva, for 3 years, where she was loved by all.

Ione was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, who sacrificed always so her children could have the best opportunities possible. She passed along to her children a love of books and knowledge; the gift of laughter and love of music; and most importantly, a deep faith that sustained her and gave us all a beautiful example of finding one's strength in Jesus.

She found great joy in, and was very proud of each and every one of her 23 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. She will be deeply missed by all.

Surviving family includes: husband of 51 years: Frank; son; Kenneth (Tammy); daughters: Kathryn (Gary) Gewont; Mary (Gary) Hillerud; LouAnne (Greg) Schell; son: Dale, daughters: Teresa (Daniel) Boehm, Angela (Larry) Berger; sons: Joseph, Jonathan (Kimberly); 23 grandchildren;
