Merton Moen 1919 - 2003

Merton E. Moen, 84, Kenmare, died Friday,June 27, 2003 in a Minot hospital.

He was born April 3, 1919, in Lunds Valley, North Dakota, the son of Emil and Mina (Mobraton) Moen. He was reared and educated in Lunds Valley. In 1942, Merton was drafted into the United States Army. He served during World War II and spent a majority of his enlisted time in France and England. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Lunds Valley where he farmed. On June 27, 1960, he married Gloria David. They lived in Stanley for a time where Merton managed the American Legion. In the early 1960's, they moved to Kenmare, where they owned and operated Mert's Inn for 20 years. He retired in 1984 and continued living in Kenmare.

He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the Country Club, all of Kenmare and the Last Man's Club, Minot. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He also liked to do carpentry work.

Survivors: wife, Gloria, Kenmare; daughters, Eileen Helmers and Elaine (Steve) Bauer, all of Kenmare and Valerie Moen, St. Petersburg, FL; five grandchildren, Blair and Zack Helmers and Cole, Lisa and Kiah Bauer; brother, Bennett Moen, Kenmare; sister, Ella Robertson, Auburn, WA and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harold and Allen Moen; sister, Burnette Combs and son-in-law, Todd Helmers.

Funeral: Tuesday, July 1, 2003 10:30 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Kenmare

Visitation: Monday from 2-6 at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare.

Vigil Prayer Service on Monday, June 30, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Burial: St. Agnes Cemetery, Kenmare.
