Vivian A. Modin 1912 - 2009
Vivian A. Crider was born November 16, 1912, at the farm home in Donnybrook, ND, to James W. and Mamie (Magner) Crider. She lived on the farm and attended school in Aurelia and Donnybrook, graduating from Donnybrook High School in 1929. Vivian furthered her education attending Minot State Teachers College obtaining her teaching certificate. Vivian married Donald Modin on March 16, 1933, in Minot. They lived and farmed in Baden Township in the Kenmare area. Vivian taught school in the Kenmare area. She also worked for ND Farmers Union. Vivian was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Kenmare, where she was active in Sunday school and the women's groups. She was elected officer of the West District Board and also Minot Conference Board of the American Lutheran Church Women, now the ELCA. She served on the Kenmare Community Hospital Board. During that time in 1990 she was appointed to the National Hospital Medical Association Board from the Sixth District. Vivian was very interested in agriculture, gardening, flowers, and the rural life. Vivian is survived by her daughter, Myrna Loy Cooke, Red Bluff, CA; son, Neil (Donna) Modin, Bismarck, ND; grandchildren, Danielle Pawley, Bellevue, NE, Sherry (Dean) Nelson, Rosemount, MN, Scott (Roberta) Modin, Bismarck, Randy (Kathy) Modin, Bismarck, and Vicki (Scott) Peterson, Bismarck; 13 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; half-brothers Joseph (Sharon) Crider, Donnybrook, ND and James (Donna) Crider, Florence, MT; Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; sisters, Hazle Crider and Maybelle Herspring; twin sister and brother, Gladys and Guy; brother, Raymond and great-grandson Colt Modin. Funeral Service: Monday, September 21, 2009 at 11 am at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare, ND Visitation: will be Monday, one hour prior to service time in the church. Burial: Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials. Memorials received will be donated to the Family Voices of ND for Autistic Awareness Program and the Kenmare Hospital. Officiants: Rev. John Syvertson and Rev.
