Melvin G. Nielsen 1927 - 2002

Melvin G. Nielsen, 75, 625 32nd Ave. SW, Minot, died Saturday, October 05, 2002, in a Minot medical center.

He was born in Westhope, ND on June 18, 1927, the son of Andrew and Alma (Jensen) Nielsen. He was raised and educated in Westhope and attended Westhope High School. He entered the United States Navy and served during World War II. His tours took him to Asia and the Pacific Rim. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to North Dakota. He went to work for Westland Oil Company. He married Inez Rothmann on December 31, 1947, in Minot. In 1952, he started work with the Great Northern Railroad, which later became the Burlington Northern Railroad. He worked as a clerk for several years, and later became Chief Clerk in the Minot office. He and Inez transferred to St. Paul, MN, where he worked in the Burlington Northern coal offices until his retirement in 1981. They returned to North Dakota, and he lived in Minot until the time of his death.

He was a member of the American Legion William G. Carroll Post # 26, Minot, the ND Last Mans Club, and the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees.

Survivors: wife, Inez, Minot; son, Richard Nielsen and wife Bonnie, Minot; grandson, Jason Nielsen, Minot; three sisters, Donna Peterson and husband Dale, Minot, Gladys Hegdahl, Bottineau, ND, and Marian Spencer and husband Harley, Ventura, CA; two sisters-in-law, Margret Nielsen, Black Mountain, NC and Marvadeane Rothmann, Bismarck, ND; numerous nieces and nephews. His infant son, Gary, his parents, and two brothers, Albert and Ivan Nielsen preceded him in death.

Funeral: Tuesday, October 8, 2002. 10:30 a.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot, ND

Visitation: Monday, October 7, 2002, from noon to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND
