Richard Mitzel 1932 - 2002 Richard Mitzel, 70, 106 17th St. SE, Minot, died Saturday, December 7, 2002, in his home. Richard was born on June 9, 1932, in Orrin, ND, the son of Christ and Anna (Miller) Mitzel. He was raised on the family farm near Orrin. He joined the United States Army and served as a medical aid technician from January 7, 1954 through November 30, 1956. He returned to North Dakota following his honorable discharge from the service. He married Angeline Burgard on July 28, 1958, in Orrin. They moved to Minot, where they lived and raised their family. He worked as a journeyman electrician for several years before being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1960. He continued to work until 1966 when his health began to fail. He was confined to a wheel chair in 1969, and his wife cared for him for the remainder of his life. Richard started missionary work for the Shrine of Our Lady of the Prairie in Powers Lake, ND in 1978. He helped in the sponsoring of the Marian Hour Radio Rosary broadcast on Sundays. He also helped sponsor KZZJ Radio Station in Rugby, ND, in memory of his father, Christ. That program began on Fathers Day , June 2, 1982, and continued to air every Sunday to the present time. On the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, February 2, 1997, he began sponsoring the Marian Hour every Sunday on KTGO Radio Station in Tioga, ND. He joined the 3rd Order of St. Francis on October 11, 1992, at the Sacred Heart Chapel in Powers Lake. Richard especially enjoyed his grandchildren and sitting outside and enjoying the sunshine. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, the Knights of Columbus, and the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and the Local Union #714. He was a very active member of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Prairie in Powers Lake. Survivors: Wife, Angie, Minot; daughter, Shirley (Randy) Parizek, Minot; son, Ricky (Gloria) Mitzel, Port St. Lucy, FL; six grandchildren, Christopher and Katie Fast, Shawna and Reed Parizek, Rick Payer and Jared Mitzel; six brothers, Mike (Pauline) Mitzel, Towner, ND, Joe (Carol) Mitzel, Minot, Leo (Judy) Mitzel, Auburn, WA, Gerald (Bernie) Mitzel, Rugby, ND, Ed (Elaine) Mitzel, Lewistown, ID, and Bradley (Debbie) Mitzel, Yorktown, VA; seven sisters, Rose Koble, Martin, ND, Fran Weinand, Minot, Theresa Burgard, Rugby, Matilda (Walter) Schmaltz, Rugby, Cecilia Bruner, Drake, ND, Rita (Louie) Schiele, Balfour, ND, and Opal (Phillip) Bachmeier, Minot; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. His parents and one brother, Clemance, preceded him in death. Funeral: Wednesday, December 11, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Prairies, Powers Lake, ND. Visitation: Monday, December 9, 2002, at the family home from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 106 17th St. SE, Minot, and on Tuesday, December 10, 2002, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Shrine of Our Lady in Powers Lake with rosary at the Shrine in Powers Lake Tues. at 7:00 p.m. Rosary Recitation and Masses: Rosary recitation, Monday, December 9, 2002, at 7:00 p.m. with a Mass to follow at 7:30 p.m., at the family home, and rosary recitation Tuesday, December 10, 2002, at 9:30 a.m. with a Mass to follow at 10:00 a.m., at the family home. Also a rosary recitation on Tuesday, at 7:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Chapel at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Prairies in Powers Lake.
