Angeline (Burgard) Mitzel 1940 - 2010

Angeline Mitzel PhotoAngeline (Burgard) Mitzel, 69, Minot, died Tuesday, March, 16, 2010, in a Minot nursing home.

Angeline Burgard was born on June 25, 1940, east of Orrin, North Dakota, on a family farm. Daughter of Ben and Theresa (Volk) Burgard. She attended Ellingdale School in Orrin. She moved to Minot, March of 1958 and worked at the Langseth Café and Red Owl. She married Richard Mitzel on July 28, 1958 in Orrin. They made their home in Minot. When Richard was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1960, she started taking on a lot of responsibilities. She worked at St. Leo’s School in the mid 60’s as a cook, to help pay for tuition, so her children could have a Catholic education. Angie had to quit her job when Richard was confined to a wheelchair in 1969. She cared for him by herself for the remainder of his life. He passed away in 2002. She pushed him around for 33 years. He use to say, “She’s always pushing me around,” and then smiled. He couldn’t have had a better pusher.  Richard and Angie started sponsoring the Marian Hour Rosary on KZZJ Radio Station in Rugby (1982) and KTGO in Tioga (1997), with her HUGE rummage/bake sales, which the proceeds went to. Fran Weinand was her awesome sales partner, who can sell a shoe like no other. Angie was a care giver, who loved her family and friends. She showed it in her generosity, by having fun: riding bike, dancing, ice skating, swimming, sledding, playing softball/kickball, basketball, volleyball, and jumping on the trampoline with her grandchildren. As a faithful member of the YMCA, Angie always did water aerobics every morning. She always took on more work then was necessary in order to help her fellow neighbors, friends, and family. She showed what hard work, generosity, and determination really were by inspiring and teaching her children, grandchildren and others the old fashion skills many of us don’t know today. She proved this by working in the garden, using a chainsaw, mowing the lawn, making horseradish, canning, crocheting, sewing, and baking homemade German recipes. She always baked the best pies and kuechen. In September of last year, she had a massive stroke and was paralyzed throughout her right side. She also was not able to communicate verbally or transmit well. Others could not believe how positive and pleasant she was to be around, even after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. She went peacefully with a Priest at her side. We know Richard is waiting at Rosehill Cemetery for her, where he had proposed to her fifty-two years ago on March 17th. Angie has given us an example to follow, a true inspiration on how to subdue our humanity to the divine graceful acceptance of the heavy cross she so willingly endured. Her faith in God, religion, and family gave her hope. Every day we think of her, we will pass on the extraordinary skills she has taught us. Everyone who knew her will miss her dearly.
