Apolonia "Appie" Meyer 1919- 2010

Appie Meyer CandleApolonia “Appie” Meyer, 91, Portage, MI, formerly of Waterford, MI, and Karlsruhe, ND, died Tuesday, August 24, 2010 in Portage, MI.

Apolonia E. “Appie” Wald was born July 6, 1919, in Karlsruhe, ND. She was one of eleven children born to John and Apolonia (Uselman) Wald. She was raised and educated in Karlsruhe.

Appie married Wendelin Meyer August 17, 1937, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Karlsruhe. They made their home in Karlsruhe for a short time before moving to Pontiac, Michigan. In 1944, they returned to Karlsruhe, ND, where they owned and operated the Meyer Grocery Store for a number of years. Following the sale of the business, they moved to Waterford, Michigan, in October of 1950. Appie worked various jobs, which included working  at the Oakland Press in Pontiac, MI for several years. But the job she was most proud of, was working as a nanny for the Kjolhede family, all of whom she had remained in contact with. 

Wendelin passed away June 24, 1998. She continued to reside in Waterford until February of 2009, when she became a resident at TenderCare in Portage, MI.

She was a former member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Karlsruhe and its Friendly Circle Homemakers Club. She was a member of St. Perpetua Catholic Church, Waterford, Michigan.

Appie had a wonderful sense of humor. She was an avid reader, enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and traveling with the Music Masters Polka Band.

Surviving family includes:  children: Wendelin (Janet) Meyer, Portage, MI, Carol (Sam) Jiles, Newport Richey, FL; and Claudia (Paul) Tipler, Alameda, CA; five grandchildren: Richard (Suzanne) Meyer, Laurie (Jeff) Voissem, Michael (Elizabeth) Burch, Mark (Begoña) Burch and Suzanne Vlcek, and her fiancé, David Lee; 7 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Appie was preceded in death by her husband, Wendelin Meyer; daughter, Marlene Meyer; 9 brothers: Joe, John, Mike, Frank, Pius, Felix, Ambrose, George and Anthony Wald; and sister, Anna Kraft. 

Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, August 30, 2010, at 10:30 am at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Karlsruhe.

Visitation
: Sunday from 1 to 5:00 pm at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial
: at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Karlsruhe, ND.
