Alex Merck 1929 - 2010 Alex was born on December 29, 1929, a son of Felix and Mary Magdalene (Meyer) Merck in Karlsruhe, ND. He was raised and educated in the Granville area. On January 15, 1948, Alex enlisted into the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country for nearly 22 years until his retirement on October 1, 1969. Following his retirement, he began a career working civil service. On August 6, 1955, Alex was united in marriage to Gerd Sandvold in Stavanger, Norway. Gerd died February 7, 1996. Following her death, Alex returned to ND to be closer to family members. Alex was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot. He is survived by: Sons: John Merck, Minot, Tony (Theresa) Merck, Wichita, KS, and Andy (Enid) Merck, Canton, GA; seven grandchildren: Ethan, Conner, Elliot, Roman, Cameron, Nathaniel and Brandon; brothers: John Merck, Granville, Joe (Beverly) Merck, Bagley, MN, William (Mary Jo) Merck, Minot, Leo (Carolyn) Merck, Minot; sisters: Catherine Duchsherer, Minot, Regina Kautek, Sawyer, and Elizabeth Schaan, Langdon; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Alex was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two sisters, Jane and Mary.
