Walter Simon Meissel 1922 - 2003 Walter Simon Meissel, 81, 100 1st St East Apt. #3, Velva, ND, died Sunday, September 14, 2003, at a Velva nursing home. He was born August 14, 1922, in Halliday, ND, the son of Phillip and Magdalina (Boepple) Meissel. He attended the Devils Lake School for the Deaf and then went to work on the family farmstead 13 miles northwest of Halliday. The family later moved into town where Walter worked for Adolf Waltz as a bartender. Walter worked at the bar in winter. In the spring he worked as a farmhand for the Swindler Brothers. In 1958, he moved to Minot, where he was employed at a local nursing home, then at Trinity Hospital. He married Shirley Jerve on May 1, 1960, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Minot. Walter later worked for Northern Bottling and Westlie's Truck Stop retiring at the age of 62. In 1995, he moved to Velva, ND and most recently lived at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva. He attended deaf church, which meets every two months at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva. Survivors: wife, Shirley, Velva; daughters, Kathy (Bret) Schonauer, Velva, Gerry (Ron) Chalcraft, Mill City, OR; grandchildren, April, Heather, Amber, and Thomas; step grandchild, Jennifer (Mike) Russell; step great-grandchildren, Dawn, Brittany, Josh, and Shaelyn; sisters, Elsie Reinhardt, Minot; Hilda Kuseter, Bozeman, MT, two stepbrothers, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Herbert Elmer and Helmuth, sisters, Lillian and Ramona, a half brother and three stepsisters. Funeral Service: Thursday, September 18, 2003, at 11 a.m. a Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva. Visitation: Thursday, September 18, 2003 from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial: Velva Community Cemetery, Velva. Music: Thelma Lysne, vocalist, "Amazing Grace"
