Victor John Matehs 1914- 2011

Victor Matehs PhotoVictor John Matehs, 96, Upham, was called Home by his Lord, Saturday, September 17, 2011 from a Minot Nursing Home.

Victor was born at the family farm house in Tacoma Township, Bottineau Country, near Russell, ND,  to Joseph and Tena (Galinot)  Matehs on November 21, 1914. He received a portion of his grade school education at Russell and completed the eighth grade at Pratt schools.

He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Tacoma Township, rural Russell and confirmed at English Lutheran Church, Eckman and again at Lynch Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Glenburn, ND.   In his early youth he worked and helped several neighbors on farms.  He helped his brother Archie farm after his Dad passed on.   His two brothers Walter and Elmer were in the service at the time.     

He married Evelyn A. Herschlip on June 24, 1944 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, rural Upham.  They resided in Minot for three years working at Christensen Seed House and the Flour Mill before having an opportunity  to get back on a farm near Glenburn.  In 1956, they purchased the farm they now own, raising Registered Hereford cattle at one time.  In later years he farmed with his son and grandson.

Victor was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, rural Upham and served as church secretary for a number of years, also serving on the building committee there.  He helped pour the foundation for the church in 1950.  He was also a member of the Little Deep Township board.

He enjoyed farming, raising cattle, especially at calving time.  He liked upland game, hunting, but fishing was his greatest joy, especially a trip to the Puget Sound, Washington, for Salmon fishing.  He also went on a memorable fly in trip to the north of Flin Flon and Pelican Rapids, Canada.

He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed by all.
           
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Matehs, Upham, children, daughter, Carolyn (Ed) Bean, Fargo, son, Ken (Sandy) Matehs, Upham, ND; and daughter, Candace (Mike) Nelson, West Fargo, ND.  Seven grandchildren, Todd (Laura) Bean, Omaha, Neb., Troy (Sara) Bean, Omaha, Neb., Joseph (Jennifer) Matehs, Upham, Joshua (Amanda) Matehs, Rugby, Jeremy (Katie) Lehman, Fargo, ND, Traci Bean Anderson (Matt), Minneapolis, MN and Jennifer Lehman Anderson (Robert) Langdon, ND; 12 great-grandchildren, Riley and Brent Bean, Omaha, Michael Bean, Fargo and James Bean who is with the Navy in Texas, Ethan and Hallie Matehs, Upham, Cody and J.D. Matehs, Rugby, Lincoln Anderson, Minneapolis, Becky, and Samantha Lear, Langdon and Lucas Anderson, Langdon; sisters-in-law, Genevieve Kitzman, Fargo, ND and Peggy Adams, Bellingham, WA., seven nieces, Ethel Peterson, Phyllis Howard, Jeraldine Stomberg, Edith Satcho, Dianne Jorgenson, Jackie Wahl and Peggy Brandt;  five nephews, Tim, Mark and Jonathan Herschlip, and  Roger and James Adams

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Walter (Lorraine) Matehs, Elmer Matehs, and Archie Matehs; and a sister, Emma (Ewalt) Wenzel and one niece, Bonnie Lunde.

Funeral:  Saturday, September 24, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, rural Upham.

Burial:  Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Upham, ND

Visitation: On Friday from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 5 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND

 Memorials:A Victor Matehs Memorial fund will be setup at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, rural Upham for the purpose of helping friends or neighbors who have suffered a tragedy to continue Victor’s work ethic of helping others.
